II. Essay: Explain the quotation of James Baldwin, relating it to social changes and social attitude of
learners at present (10 points):
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is face,”
We, humans, have mastered the art of avoiding problems we don't want to face. That is a
privilege of today's society's safety offers us—the capacity to avoid dealing with problems we don't want
to deal with. Baldwin's quote can be applied to many different aspects in life, for example, our own past.
We must confront our past in order to be at ease with ourselves or others. We may not changed what
has happened in the past but we can always make a change in the present to have a different future.
Take for example, a drug addict who has finished their rehab. They may not change the fact that they
have done wrong in their past, but they can always choose what their future would be. The first step for
that is acceptance. It really doesn't matter what happened in the past. What matters is we learned
something from it, and used that lesson to become a better person in the present and in the future.
