THE WORKSHEET

Reading
Starter: Discuss these questions.
1. What kinds of clothes do you wear for school?
2. Do you think school uniforms are good idea or bad idea?

School Uniforms

In many countries, like Britain and Japan, wearing school uniforms is still a tradition,
but in others like United States, France, and Germany, uniforms are not so common.
Some people say that uniforms are important. Uniforms help students learn to obey
rules and learn to study better. They make all the students equal in appearance. They also
help students feel like part of the school.
Other people disagree. They say that uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive.
Most importantly, they say that when students wear uniforms, they cannot express
themselves with their clothes.
Some students think uniforms can be attractive. Some school students make small
changes to their uniforms because they want to look more fashionable. They use their
uniforms as a way to express themselves. Some students try to attend the school with the
best uniform. This is a different way to look at uniforms. An old tradition is turning into a new
fashion.

ARGUMENTATIVE PARAGRAPH

The Content:
 In your opening paragraph, you need to state your point of view.
 Continue your composition by putting forward an argument for a view that is
opposite of your own. This gives you a chance to answer that opinion later.
 Explain the evidence that is put forward to support that opinion.
 Then, go on to put forward your point of view about that particular aspect of
the argument. You are comparing, so use phrases like “however” and “on the
contrary.”
 Give evidence to support your view.

Read the following text.

Elephant Hunting

I am very much against elephant hunting. I think elephant hunters are putting the
species in danger of disappearing. Elephant hunters argue that there are many elephants in
the world. They say elephants should be hunted because we need their trunks and teeth to
make different things. On the contrary, I believe that there is evidence that uncontrolled
elephant hunting can endanger the species. There is an area called Gorongosa where it has
been reported that all the elephants have disappeared because of uncontrolled hunting.

SHARING OPINION

Teacher : OK, we’re going to debate whether online chatting is good or bad for us.
We’ll start with you, David. Are you for or against online chatting?
David : Well, online chatting is good, I think. It’s good for making friends. Maybe it
helps us relax, too.
Teacher : thank you, David. Now Ann, your turn.
Ann : I’m against online chatting. First, you can’t be sure who you’re talking to.
Second, it’s easy to spend too much time chatting online. Third, it’s not as
natural as talking face to face.

Discuss the questions.

2. Who speaks the ideas in better order and more confidently? Why?
