A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English for Grade 7

I. Objectives
Learning Competency: Distinguish features of academic writing (EN7WC-l-c-4.2)
Learning objectives: At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
a. identify the features of academic writing;
b. construct sentences specifying the features of academic writing;
c. value the importance of Distinguish features of academic writing.

B. Motivation
The teacher will present a picture and allow the students to give their own
interpretation on the picture based on the questions.
 What do you see in the picture?
 Do you still apply this in your daily routine? Why or why not?
 Is writing still important nowadays? Support your answer.

C. Activity
a. Arranged me, post me!
The students will be group into two (2).
Learning Task:
 Each of the group will be given two (2) words that are in jumbled letters.
 They will arrange them, then post it on the board.

 What comes into your mind about these four (4) words?

 Responsibility

D. Analysis
a. Identification
The students will identify sentences using Objectivity, Complexity, Formality and
Responsibility based from the paragraph given below.
The society needs a decree so as the school, too. This essay will discuss
the rules of the University. Every University has rules and regulations which must
be followed. As what Urieh (2008) shared, strict disciplinary measures are used
by school authorities to control the students and make them adhere to the various
rules and regulations. Furthermore, it is to direct students to exhibit acceptable
attitude and behavior within and outside the school.

E. Abstraction
The teacher will discuss the features of academic writing.
Features of academic writing
1. Objectivity is used to avoid the first person pronoun (I and we), also to avoid
personal bias.

Given example:
Incorrect: I will describe the reasons for this in my essay.
Correct: The reasons for this will be described in this essay.

2. Complexity uses more varied vocabulary.

Given example:
Incorrect: You can buy this device anywhere.
Correct: This device can be purchased anywhere.

3. Formality avoids slang, colloquial language, overly used idiomatic language,


ellipsis or contractions.

Given example:
Incorrect: It’s impossible to get rid of this problem by doing this. 
Correct: This problem cannot be solved by those measures.

4. Responsibility involves justifying the author’s position and providing evidence for
the claims you made.

Given example:
Incorrect: I think smoking in all public places should be forbidden.
Correct: Smoking in public places poses a significant risk to non-smokers.
According to the Report on the Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to
Tobacco Smoke (2006), passive smoking may cause disease, disability, and even
death.

F. Application
a. Pick Me Right!

With the same group, the teacher will show three (3) small folders. Then group
leaders will pick one (1) small folder. The folders contain different tasks for them to
do.

Learning Task:
 Construct sample sentences using four (4) Features of Academic Writing.
 Differentiate two (2) features and construct sentences each of it.
 Differentiate the four (4) Features of Academic Writing

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Write O if the sentence is Objectivity, C for Complexity, F for Formality and R
for Responsibility.

1. According to the experts, at least one-fourth of the area of a country must have forest.
2. Brown (2003) concludes that the level of motivation to succeed depends not only on
factors in the home but also peer influence.
3. The future of this invention is still unresolved.
4. Many futile attempts have been made to teach animals to speak in human fashion.
5. The experiment was completed as instructed.

V. Assignment
Directions: Find an essay and write down five (5) sentences that belong to the
features of academic writing then point out the four (4) features used in the sentence.
