The five characteristics of news
Accuracy – Every statement in news items;
such as name, age, date
must be correct. Quotation of every definite
word or expression or
sentence must be precise in presentation of the
true facts.
Ex: President Duterte has signed Republic
Act 11476.
Balance – Giving of a fair picture of the
events as it takes place by
putting together of all facts in a manner that
the report conveys the
correct and factual impression.
Ex: Globally, an estimated 15 percent of
young women give birth before age 18.
Objective- Reporting of facts impartially as they
occurred. It means
that the news covers to the consumer intimated
without any personal
bias or any outside influence that would make it
appear anything but
what it is.
Ex: The objective of the law is to effectively
inculcate the basic tenets of good manners and
right conduct in students.
Concise and Clear- News should be well-
paced, unified and above
all written so clearly that the meaning of the
story is absolutely plain.
Ex: Quicker, safer test could accurately
detect some bowel cancers.
 
Current – As how the first three letters of
the ‘News’ is spelled – N.E.W!
It stresses the latest event that happened.
Ex: Jovelyn Galleno is missing since
August 5, 2022 until now.

MISSING CHARACTER
Read the leads below. Identify what characteristics of the news is missing in each item. From the choices
below, write the letter of the correct answer.

1. A certain department of the government is urging local governments to pass resolutions punishing quarantine
violators with imprisonment as it reminded the public to strictly comply with health protocols to arrest the further
spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

TEST I. Appraising the News article- Real or Fake

1. Father was reading a newspaper while having his morning coffee; he was stunned on the news that reads,
Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported 2,434 new coronavirus disease 2019 cases – the highest in a
single day, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections in the country to 44,254. Of the 2,434 cases,
1,147 were fresh cases or test results released to patients within the last three days, while
1,287 were late cases or test results released to patients beyond four days. After reading the
news, what father is expected to do?

a. Father intensifies the health protocols in their home like; handwashing, disinfection, social
distancing, and proper wearing of mask to protect his whole family.
b. Diligently composed the whole news on his Facebook status and post it publicly.
c. Neglected what he read as it is already the new normal.
d. He shrugged his shoulders because the increase of victims is expected.
