Background of the Study

How to start?

Engage in your problem immediately on the first sentence of your background of the study. Then,

explain why it exists? Provide information by citing international situation and narrow down to local

situation.

Some questions to be answered in the BOS:

1. What is your problem?

2. Why do you need to study your topic?

3. Why do you think the problem needs attention?

The first case of Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) in the Philippines was confirmed last

January 30, 2020. The government declared a health emergency last March 2020, following a

spike in new confirmed cases and local transmission. The move released funds to local

governments and healthcare officials to handle any further surge in cases. What else? 2

sentences. The COVID-19 Code Alert system was revised upwards to Red Sublevel 2 on 12

March (Duddu, 2020).

The Philippine response to COVID-19 has been described as one of the longest and

strictest lockdowns in the world. Entire provinces and cities were put into lockdown, mobility

was restricted, and the wearing of masks and social distancing were strictly enforced. Violations

were met with punitive action. The government relied heavily on the police and the military to
ensure that order was maintained and that all health protocols were followed. This has led

some observers and scholars to describe the government response as either “draconian,”

“militarised,” or “police-centric” (Maru, 2020). Good statement.

According to Asian Voice (2020), "A few days ago, we received the following letter from

one of our readers. It reflects the fears, the frustrations, and the lack of confidence of our

people with the government response to the Covid-19 crisis facing the nation. It appears the

government has not signed a single contract for the supply of Covid-19 vaccines from any

supplier and yet the government will not allow the private sector to procure any vaccine without

the onerous provision that 50 per cent of the vaccines will be donated to the government.” "The

government was trying to force down our throats the Sinovac vaccine with only an efficacy of

50 per cent because they will make P16.8 billion (S$460 million) in kickbacks according to

Senator Lacson. I would estimate that at least 10 per cent or even more of our population can

afford to pay for their own vaccines since the price of the vaccines ranges only from P680 to

P5,400. A lot of people will be willing to pay these amounts since their lives are at stake (so)

why is the government blocking the importation of these vaccines by the private sector? As

Sen. Franklin Drilon stated, these people are PLAYING GOD while people are dying." Make this

more concise. Please rephrase the paragraph into 2-3 sentences.

“What a government we have, they don't even care if we live or die. This is probably the

(worst) government we ever had and the President is said to have a 91-percent approval rating
according to Pulse Asia, now called 'False Asia.' Mahar Mangahas of SWS is a batchmate of

mine in school but he refuses to make a survey about the popularity of the President since he

doesn't want to be ridiculed "(Farolan, 2020). Remember this is not yet the literature

review. You should be explaining the problem.

From that, the researchers took the initiative to conduct a study to fully examine the

views and perceptions of students about the COVID-19 response of Government and to extract

their own suggested ways in order to come up an ideal actions to deal with it.

Do not put erroneous sentences which could mislead the readers. You should

be able to enlighten what is really going on the topic. What is the problem with the

topic in international and local setting? I still do not see the PROBLEM in the whole

output. Kindly make a clear statement that would describe the topic.

These should be answered in the BOS:

1. What are the government interventions? How do you compare this to

other countries?

2. What are the current problems with covid-19 intervention by the

government? Cite compelling reasons from international and local (PH)

references. Then, go down in the local setting (marabut).

3. Why these need attention?

4. Why do you need to study the topic?
