I. Background Information for the Learners (Brief discussion

of the lesson. Cite examples if possible).
Narrative elements are all the aspects that make up a story. There are 5
main elements that apply to narratives in general-the character, setting, conflict, plot
and theme.
Character refers to the main people (or other living things) that are involved
in the story. Setting is where the different scenes take place. Writers use characters to
perform actions and speak the dialogue of a story.
Conflict tells what problem or challenges does the main character in the
story face for every story worth reading has a conflict. The four types of conflict are
man vs. man e.g. hero must defeat the villain who ruined his life. Man vs. nature e.g.
a man is attacked by a snake while on a camping trip. Man vs. himself e.g.I will not
lose my nerve; and man vs. society e.g. an immigrant fights to change a law that
prevents him from becoming a citizen. Man vs. technology e.g. a team of students
struggles to build an underwater robot for a contest. Man vs. supernatural e.g. a man
struggles to get home after being transported back in time by a mysterious spell.
Plot tells how the problem is being introduced and what steps does the
character take to solve the problem.
The theme tells on what’s the message of the story. It is the underlying
insight, the moral or idea that the writer is expressing through the story.
