Course description
The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the developmental psychology.
This course explores different stages of human life; Prenatal, Infancy, Childhood,
adolescence, Adulthood. It also covers biological, cognitive, psychological and social
changes occurring in individuals during them. The course will focus including; theories of
development, genetics and development, birth and the neonate, cognitive and brain
development, early experience, attachment, motor and language development, social and
moral development.
Individuals Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Through the study of this course students will be
able to:
(KNOWLEDGE)
1. Describe basic concepts of human development and learning
2. Explain major domains of development especially with respect to individual variability
3. Associate major stages of human development and learning to specific instructional
procedure, issues and contexts;
4. Distinguish between different theories of developmental and learning and their
applications in varied learning situations;
5. Summarize the importance and effect of motivation in teaching and learning on the basis
of theories
6. Express nature, concept and theories of intelligence
(SKILLS)
1. Apply different aspects of human development and human learning theories to the
teaching and learning;
2. Evaluate significant theories of human development and human learning in terms of
learners’ personal, social, affective, psychomotor and cognitive make-up;
3. Demonstrate motivational techniques and skills in teaching with reference to the theories
of development and learning
4. Skillfully address and overcome the individual differences in the classroom
5. Develop their own teaching style in the light of human learning theories
(DISPOSITIONS)
1. Appreciate the complexity of human development and learning especially with respect to
the teacher’s role and relationship to learners;
2. Develop his own philosophy to value the worth and dignity of each learner
3. Respect the cognitive, affective, psychosocial and psychomotor variability and diversity
among learners and the continuous changes that occur as individuals develop;
4. Organize group discussions to discuss the relationship between development and
learning
5. Practice major theories of human development and learning when teaching
6. Show appropriate professional attitude towards learners of different age groups and
abilities.
