What is Mental
Health?
Mental health refers to the
emotional, behavioral and overall
well-being of a human being.
Mental illnesses are described
as changes in the mind, thoughts
and feelings that are strong
enough to affect average day to
day functioning

One in five people in Canada will
experience a mental health problem or
illness in any given year. 

Different Disorders
- Anxiety disorders - OCD, panic
disorders, or different phobias.

- Mood disorders - Depression,
bipolar

- Personality disorders

- Post traumatic stress disorder

- Psychotic disorders - schizophrenia

interfere with this process and take
away important opportunities needed for

Anxiety and Depression
Symptoms:

- Feelings of loneliness

- Excessive crying

- Perfectionism

- Feeling unloved

- Paranoia

- Guilt


Overall creates worrying symptoms. 


Anxiety and Depression make it incredibly challenging to trust
others and make it easier to break any hard-made connection.


Extreme Emotional Up and Downs
Symptoms:

- Increased irritability

- Anger

- Increased sensitivity


This leads to negative relationships that often lead to failure
and this can cause low self esteem.


The emotional instability can cause people in the
relationship to feel distant and on edge around the person
with the illness. 

Delusions
Symptoms:

- Overthinking

- Unnecessary interpretations

- Treating others based on incorrect conclusions


One of the basic conditions for relationships and socialization
is the ability to empathize. People who cannot empathize will
have completely different thoughts and attitudes. This
contradiction makes it difficult to be together as a community
member

People with poor mental health can can
quickly become socially isolated
because of persistent negative
emotions.
How Does Mental Health Affect
School Performance
Study Done on College Students 


- Suggests that depression can lower GPA



- Anxiety can amplify the effects 


Of the students included in the study,


- 30% reported stress



- 22% reported anxiety

- 20% reported sleep difficulties

- 14% reported depression

Study Done on 1700 Children Throughout Their
Life from ages 3-20
- Behavioral problems seen at age 3 were linked to poorer
school performance at age 12

- The same was seen for issues developed around age 12
into adulthood

- There were no links found between good performance at
age 12 and poor mental health at age 20

- Mental health issues can be developed at a very young age



- You can become mentally ill later in life

- Mental health issues cause poorer educational performance

- A high percentage of people report that they feel they have
or have been diagnosed with a mental illness by the time
they reach post-secondary education
