Plan – IME 454 Maintenance Engineering & Management

Experiment #
Topic
1 Developing General Working Procedures for facilities to support Operations & Maintenance.
In this, the students are expected to understand the working methodology, hierarchy,
documentation and flow of information within the scope of maintenance work in the lab and
suggest the gaps as well as support the answers with best known practices.
Conducting Visual Inspection of Machines, Equipment and Tools to know their physical condition
2
for probable chemical and/or mechanical damage.
The students are expected to visualize the equipment in the lab and collect evidences of failures,
damages and any other discrepancies keeping in view the requirements for conducting a good
visual inspection and recommend solutions as well as come prepared in their psychomotor
domain to correct things noted in this visual inspection and provide evidence after implementing
proposed procedures for repair / refurbishment.
Performing general maintenance activities on various types of machines in Machine Tools &
3
Machining (MTM) laboratory.
The students are required to refer to the OEM manuals, current schedules of maintenance as well
as standards and best known practices for their assigned machine tool and propose an effective
procedure for general maintenance activities along with required tools and accessories and
demonstrate its implementation during psychomotor domain.
Preparing periodic schedules for the maintenance activities on various types of machines in
4
Machine Tools & Machining (MTM) laboratory based on maintenance strategies.
The students are required to refer to the OEM maintenance manuals, current schedules of
maintenance as well as standards and best known schedule preparation practices for their
assigned machine tool and propose an effective maintenance schedule with required tools and
accessories and timeframes.
5 Employing Computer Aided Techniques for Maintenance Schedules preparation.
The students are required to employ computer based tools for preparing effective maintenance
schedules and demonstrate their benefits over manual scheduling.
Developing operational procedures for the various types of machines in Machine Tools &
6
Machining (MTM) laboratory.
The students are required to propose effective working procedures for the machines by carefully
keeping in view the machine safety and worker safety and validate these procedures during
psychomotor domain.
7 Conducting FMEA analysis using RCM tools.
The students need to apply this methodology to their assigned machines as per its detailed and
stepwise procedure. Students are required to investigate relevant literature to achieve the
application of this tool in an effective manner.
Determining Functionally Significant Items (FSIs) for the various types of machines in Machine
8
Tools & Machining (MTM) laboratory.
The students need to apply Logic Tree Analysis methodology to their assigned machines as per its
detailed and stepwise procedure. Students are required to investigate relevant literature to
achieve the application of this tool in an effective manner.
Applying non-destructive analysis techniques for assets health assessment using predictive
10
maintenance strategy.
The students are expected to demonstrate the application of vibration analysis and thermography
along with their skill / capability on identifying the patterns of different kinds of machine failures
as well as proposed solutions and concepts.
11 Recommend HVAC equipment for the main building of IME department.
This is assigned as Complex Engineering Problem. Students need to apply the concepts from heat
transfer, psychrometry and understanding of different types of equipment keeping in view their
`
efficiency and different types of configurations to propose the solution for the above problem
along with valid assumptions and limitations for heir calculations.
