RATIONALE

Online shopping activity was broadly defined, included finding online retailers and
products, searching for product information, selecting payment options, communicating with
other consumers, and purchasing products or services (Market Business News, 2021). In
today’s digital world, acquiring goods and services are much convenient than before due to
online shopping. These provide all types of items to be available in the online world. The
popular online stores to us—students are Shopee, Lazada, Zalora, and Shein. These online
stores are open 24/7. Generally speaking, online stores are exceptionally efficient even during
the holidays.
As stated in Accountlearning (2021), there are numerous benefits of online shopping like
time-saving, access from everywhere, convenience, availability 24 hours a day, variety of
products, various options available to compare products and brands. However, there are still
have perceived risk factors and psychological factors are involved in online shopping and this
includes the material self. It is now easy for individuals to buy items over and over again
because of those advantages and benefits mentioned even though they do not really need
them. Since many people now prefer to shop online over going into physical stores and
experiencing this kind of situation, we decided that our program will focus on the importance of
controlled materialistic self by proper tracking of we purchase online.
According to Paul Caña (2020), the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on Filipinos’
behavior online is obvious. When people had less time outdoors, they will have more time at
home and on the internet. As the number of people going out to eat, shop, or watch movies
nosedived, so has video streaming, gaming, and online shopping exploded. We can observe it
until now due to its conveniency. In online shopping, we simply add to cart then check out and
that’s it. We can buy anything online without going outdoors and exposing ourselves to the
virus. And this idea was supported by Facebook's Emerging Trends Research. Christine Cudis
(2021) explained that marketers who revolve to digital amid the health crisis were continually
gained profit. Also, consumers were more likely to choose online shopping for their
convenience. The study indicated 87 percent of respondents are willing to spend more for ease
of access to products or services.
Nevertheless, we should remember that too much is bad. If we didn’t control ourselves
from purchasing online, it may lead to addiction. But we should meet at least three criteria to
consider our behavior as addiction. Bussinesmirror (2020) mentioned that the three criterias
are: (1) the behavior is clearly excessive given its context; (2) it causes significant distress or
impairment for the person or important people in their lives; and (3) it persists despite not
resulting in reward. He also added that online shopping might be considered addiction if you
find yourself spending a lot of time shopping, buying a lot more than you need, or finding it
hard to stop shopping even though you rarely seem to enjoy the stuff you buy. Relationship
issues and financial hardship are other key clues your online shopping has become a problem.
Some people may experience online shopping problems without even spending a lot of money;
just spending excessive amounts of time browsing products may be enough to warrant
reflection and possibly intervention.
