De-multiplexer Overview in Logic Design

This document describes a lab experiment on 4-line-to-1-line and 8-line-to-1-line multiplexers. The objectives are to design and understand the operation of these multiplexers and implement Boolean functions using them. Diagrams and truth tables for 4x1 and 8x1 multiplexers are provided. Boolean functions for the output of each are defined based on the select lines and inputs. Components required and procedures for the lab are also outlined. The instructor and affiliation are listed at the end.

Digital Logic Design Lab Spring 2021

Title: 4-Line-to-1-Line Multiplexer & 8-Line-to-1-Line Multiplexer

Lab Worksheet #8
Name: SYED MUNEEB Semester: 2ND

Sapid#: 25420 Section: CYBER SECURITY

INTRODUCTION & BASIC CONCEPTS:
Multiplex means many into one. A multiplexer is a circuit with many inputs but only one
output. By applying control signals, we can steer any input to the output. Figure 1 illustrates the
general idea. The circuit has n input signals, one output signal and m control signals
Multiplexer is also called data selector because the output bit depends upon the input data bit
selected. Input data bit is selected by the selection lines. De-multiplexers performs the opposite
function of multiplexers.
Objectives
The objectives of this experiment
1. To design a 4 × 1 & 8 x 1 multiplexer using basic gates

2. To understand the operation of 4 × 1 & 8 x 1 multiplexer.

3. To implement the Boolean function using 4 × 1& 8 x 1 multiplexer.

Equipment Required
IC 74LS08 Cutter
IC 74LS32 Single Core Wire
IC 74LS04 Tweezers
Multi-meter Pair of Pliers

Procedure
1) Firstly, we will open logic gate simulator.
2) Select 8 input.
3) We use Not gate
4) Implement the circuit using and gate which IC is 7400
5) Connect the inputs to the input switches provided in the IC Trainer Kit.
6) Connect the outputs to the switches.
7) Apply various combinations of inputs according to the truth table and observe
the condition of LEDs.
8) Note down the corresponding output readings for various combinations of
inputs.

Write a Boolean function for output of 4x1 Multiplexer:

F(So, S1, Io,I1,I2,I3,I4)=

Y = S0’ S1’ I0 + S0’ S1 I1 + S0 S1’ I2 + S0 S1I3

8 x 1 Line Multiplexer:
8  1 Multiplexer has eight input lines, one output and three selection lines or control
lines. One of the input line is selected (by means of control lines) and transmitted to the
output. As multiplexer has only one output, hence it has only one output function. In other
words it can implement only one Boolean function.
