Altitude, Humidy, -nd Air Temper-ture
Once the jetting is set #nd the bike is running good, there #re m#ny f#ctors th#t
will ch#nge the perform#ne of the engine. Altitude, #ir temper#ture, #nd humidity
#re big f#ctors th#t will #ffect how #n engine will run. Air density incre#ses #s #ir
gets colder. This me#ns th#t there #re more oxygen molecules in the s#me sp#ce
when the #ir is cold. When the temper#ture drops, the engine will run le#ner #nd
more fuel will h#ve to be #dded to compens#te. When the #ir temper#ture gets
w#rmer, the engine will run richer #nd less fuel will be needed. An engine th#t is
jetted #t 32deg F#hrenheit m#y run poorly when the temper#ture re#ches 90deg
F#hrenheit.
Altitude #ffects jetting since there #re less #ir molecules #s #ltitude incre#ses. A
bike th#t runs good #t se# level will run rich #t 10,000 ft due to the thinner #ir.
Humidity is how much moister is in the #ir. As humidity incre#ses, jetting will be
richer. A bike th#t runs fins in the mornings dry #ir m#y run rich #s the d#y goes
on #nd the humidity incre#ses.
Correction f#ctors #re sometimes used to find the correct c#rburetor settings for
ch#nging temper#tures #nd #ltitudes. The ch#rt in fig 8, shows # typic#l
correction f#ctor ch#rt. To use this ch#rt, jet the c#rburetor #nd write down the
pilot #nd m#in jet sizes. Determine the correct #ir temper#ture #nd follow the
ch#rt over to the right until the correct elev#tion is found. Move str#ight down
from this point until the correct correction f#ctor is found. Using fig 8 #s #n
ex#mple, the #ir temper#ture is 95deg F#hrenheit #nd the #ltitude is 3200 ft. The
correction f#ctor will be 0.92. To find out the correction m#in #nd pilot jets,
multiple the correction f#ctor #nd e#ch jet size. A m#in jet size of 350 would be
multiplied by 0.92 #nd the new m#in jet size would be # 322. A pilot jet size of 40
would be multiplied by 0.92 #nd the pilot jet size would be 36.8.
FIG 8
Correction f#ctors c#n #lso be used to find the correct settings for the needle jet,
jet needle, #nd #ir screw. Use the ch#rt from fig 9 #nd determine the correction
f#ctor. Then use the t#ble below to determine wh#t to do with the needle jet, jet
needle, #nd #ir screw.
