Electrodes for ERBA LYTE Range
1. Measuring principle
Ion Selective Electrode is a type of electrochemical sensor. It converts the ion activity to
the electric potential of the electrode. The relation conforms to the NERNST equation.
Note:
Ｅ：the electric potential of the electrode Ｅ0：the standard electric potential of the
electrode
ｎ：the charge of measured ion Ｒ：gas constant (8.314 J/K.mol)
Ｔ：absolute temperature(273 + t℃) Ｆ：Faraday constant (96487 c/mol)
CX ：the concentration of measured ion ｆ X ：the activity coefficient of measured ion
From Nernst equation, that under certain experiment conditions, the Logarithm of the ion
activity has a linear relation with the electrode potential (E). Electrolyte analyzer uses
“standard comparison” to measure the concentration of K ions, Na ions, chloride ions,
calcium ions and pH value in the sample. First measure the electrode potential of K+, Na+,
Cl-, Ca2+, and the pH in two known concentration of calibration liquid (drift correction fluid
and the slope of the calibration fluid) . Create a calibration curve in the machine, and then
measure the electrode potential of K+, Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ and pH in sample solution, obtain the
concentration of the ions from the calibration curve. The data will be displayed in the LCD
screen or print out by built-in printer.
2. Electrode performance
The K+, Cl -, Ca2+ Ion Selective Electrodes are PVC sensitive membrane electrodes with
special active material while the Na+, pH Ion Selective Electrodes are special glass
sensitive membrane electrodes. Below is the performance of K+, Na+, Cl -, Ca2+ and pH
electrodes:

Note: *the unit of pH is pH. The shelf life of Ref electrode is 360 days.
3. Maintenance
1. If the filling solution in some electrodes is sufficient, users can use the electrodes directly.
If not, Kindly refill the filling solution：Counterclockwise unscrewing Ag / AgCl internal
reference electrode, add the dedicated electrode filling solution with a syringe along the
inner cavity wall of the electrode. It is appropriate to add filling solution to 2/3 of total
volume. And then clockwise screw on the Ag / AgCl internal reference electrode, dry the
outer shell of electrode. Put the electrodes back to electrode chamber.
Note: Make sure to add the filling solution to the Ref electrode.
2. After using for a long time, the protein in the blood sample may be attracted to the
sensitive membrane or pipe of the electrode, therefore, it’s necessary to maintain with
de-proteinising solution.
3. When sensitive glass membrane of Na+ and pH electrode response slower or have
worse stability, use electrode conditioner to maintain. Note: This electrode conditioner
only work on glass membrane electrode, not the PVC membrane electrode!
4. The electrode storage requirements: all electrode should be stored in the dark under
5-25 °C.
