RESOURCE

Any thing that can be used to satisfy the construction needs is called construction resource.

Resource management is the process of planning the resources necessary to meet the
objectives of the project, and to satisfy the client’s requirements.

Without proper resource management, projects can fall behind schedule, or can become
unprofitable. The objective is to ensure the adequate and timely supply of resources, whilst at
the same time maximizing the utilization of resources between projects.

In project management, resources are required to carry out the project tasks. They can be
people, equipment, facilities, funding, or anything else capable of definition, required for the
completion of a project activity.

Fundamental to resource management is real-time visibility of; what resources are needed,
what resources are available, where resources are located, and the ability to schedule those
resources accordingly.

Construction resources include:

• Products and materials.
• Construction plant, tools and equipment.
• Human resources.
• Space and facilities.
• Subcontractors.
• Finance.
NATURE & TYPES OF RESOURCES
Making a resource management plan work

Successful resource management requires:

• Access to the up-to-date project plan with clear definition of the different
phases of work and activity scheduling.

• Understanding the types of resources that are needed.

• Understanding the availability and optimum utilization of resources.

• Understanding the potential for developing resources for new uses.

• Understanding of the lead time required to ensure that resources are available
when needed.

• The ability to redeploy resources if works need to be accelerated, or

if works are completed.

Resource management
Definition
Resource management comprises the acquisition and deployment of the internal and external resources
required to deliver the project, programme or portfolio.
PROJECT RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Project Resource Management includes the processes to identify, acquire, and manage the resources
needed for the successful completion of the project. These processes help ensure that the right
resources will be available to the project manager and project team at the right time and place.
The Project Resource Management processes are:
• Plan Resource Management—The process of defining how to estimate, acquire, manage, and utilize
physical and team resources.

• Estimate Activity Resources—The process of estimating team resources and the type and quantities
of material, equipment, and supplies necessary to perform project work.

• Acquire Resources—The process of obtaining team members, facilities, equipment, materials,

supplies, and other resources necessary to complete project work.

• Develop Team—The process of improving competencies, team member interaction, and the overall
team environment to enhance project performance.
• Manage Team—The process of tracking team member performance, providing feedback, resolving
issues, and managing team changes to optimize project performance.

• Control Resources—The process of ensuring that the physical resources assigned and allocated to
the project are available as planned, as well as monitoring the planned versus actual use of resources,
and performing corrective action as necessary.
2.1 Plan Resource Management Overview

• Plan resource management is the process of defining

how to estimate, acquire, manage, and use team and
physical resources.

• Key benefit: it establishes the approach and level of

management effort needed for managing project resources.

How to map the activity plan to available resources
• Allocation of resources leads to : • The result of resource allocation:

– Review and modify the activity plan – Activity schedule

– Revise stages • planned start and completion
– Revise project completion Dates dates for each activity
– Resource schedule
• dates on which each
resource will be required and
the level of that requirement
– Cost schedule
• Planned cumulative
expenditure incurred by the
use of resources over time
RESOURCE SCHEDULING
Resource scheduling is a collection of techniques used to calculate the resources
required to deliver the work and when they will be required.
