(MF010) GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2 ONLINE ASSESSMENT

January-April 2020 semester

General instructions:

1. This assessment consists of 8 assignment questions to be answered in mini essay-style.


2. This assessment’s coverage is from Chapter 6 (Alkyl halides) to Chapter 14 (Groups 2, 4 and
7 of Periodic Table).
3. Answer all 8 assignment questions below by typing into MS Word document. If you need to
insert drawings into the document, you can do so by photographing a hand-drawn
diagramme and inserting the photo into your MS Word document. Submit your work into
my General Chemistry 2’s Course Networking (CN) Dropbox. Make sure you type your name
and student ID number onto your MS Word document too. The name of your file should
also be your name and student ID number. If the CN Dropbox is giving you problems to
upload your submission, then you can send as email attachment to me at
alicephua@ucsiuniversity.edu.my together with a Whatsapp message to me at 012-
2635962.
4. Total marks for this assessment is 50.
5. The marks allocation for each assignment question is indicative of the relative length of the
mini-essay expected.
6. You are given 5 days to complete and submit this online assessment. Late submission will
not be entertained.
7. You are allowed to refer to whatever relevant resources to complete this assessment, BUT
please do not plagiarize other people’s work or writings.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS:

1. How are the SN2 and SN1 reaction mechanisms different from each other? Draw an example
reaction mechanism for each one as well to help illustrate your answer.

2. Briefly explain how the experiment about the comparison of the heats of hydrogenation
between cyclohexane, cyclohexene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene and benzene is able to indicate the
unusual stability of benzene? (Hint: please refer to Slide 9 in “Benzene” chapter of the lecture
notes.)

3. Briefly discuss about the oxidation of alcohols.

4. Briefly describe the four ways of preparing ketones.

5. Arrange the 3 compounds below in the order of increasing acidity and explain why you have
arranged them in that order:

Fluoroethanoic acid, 3-fluoropropanoic acid, iodoethanoic acid

6. Explain briefly about Fischer esterification and then draw an example reaction to illustrate
your explanation.

7. Write a brief essay on any ONE of these heterocyclic amines:

Pyridine, pyrrole, quinoline, imidazole, indole, pyrimidine, pyrrolidine, piperidine.

8. Briefly discuss about the allotropism of carbon.
