Thermal Energy Lab 2

The purpose of this experiment is to provide evidence that the transfer of thermal energy occurs

when two components of different temperatures are combined within a closed system resulting in

thermal equilibrium.

Hypothesis

As the temperature of the milk increases, the warm milk and cold banana will reach equilibrium

at a faster time.

Materials

● Milk

○ Low fat 1%

● Banana

○ sliced and frozen

● Plastic bag

● Insulating cup

● Beaker

● Hot plate

● Temperature probe

● Lab Quest

● Temperature gun

● Lab apron

● Safety goggles
Thermal Energy Lab 3

● Tin foil

Variables:

Independent Variable: temperature of milk

Dependent Variable: time taken to reach equilibrium

Control: type of milk / amount of milk

Procedure

1. Put on lab aprons and safety goggles, and tie back hair if necessary.

2. Slice up a banana and stick it in a plastic bag.

3. Freeze the plastic bag of bananas.

4. Heat up 250 mL of milk in a beaker with a hot plate.

5. Take out the bag of bananas from the freezer. Choose two banana slices and measure the

temperature of the slices using a temperature gun.

6. Place the bananas in another bag.

7. Measure the temperature of the heated milk using a temperature probe.

8. Pour the milk in the insulating cup.

9. Put the bag of bananas in the milk.

10. Cover cup with foil and stick in temperature probe

11. Record data and time

12. Repeat steps 1-11 for the next trials.
