OBJECTIVE: Illustrates congruent segments and midpoint of a segment

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

➢ Illustrating Congruent Segments and Midpoint of a Segment

Relationships between and among line segments is one of the basic concepts that
must be identified and understood in the study of Geometry.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Segments are congruent if they have the same lengths.

The symbol for “congruence” or “is congruent to” is ≅. In the
̅̅̅̅ is congruent to 𝐶𝐷
figure, 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ . In symbols, 𝐴𝐵
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐶𝐷
̅̅̅̅.

➢ Congruence of segments is reflexive.

➢ Congruence of segments is symmetric.
➢ Congruence of segments is transitive.

➢ The midpoint of a line segment is the point that divides the segment into two congruent
segments.

Z is the midpoint of line segment 𝑃𝑅 ̅̅̅̅. Thus, ̅̅̅̅

𝑃𝑍 and 𝑍𝑅̅̅̅̅ are congruent line segments.
̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ and 𝑍𝑅
𝑃𝑍 is one half of 𝑃𝑅 ̅̅̅̅ is also one half of 𝑃𝑅
̅̅̅̅.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE

Line segments FK, LN, CP and TU have their

corresponding measures. Write the congruent
segments using the correct symbols.

SUMMING UP
• Congruent segments are segments having the same length.
• A midpoint is a point between the endpoints of a line segment
that divides the line segments into two congruent parts. A
midpoint bisects a line segment.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Answer each of the following by using the number line below:

1. Find the coordinate of the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅ 𝐴𝐹 .

2. Show that F is not between D and E.
̅̅̅̅ − ̅̅̅̅
3. Show that 𝐷𝐺 𝐸𝐹 = 𝐷𝐸 ̅̅̅̅ .
̅̅̅̅ + 𝐹𝐺
4. Show that C is not between G and D.
5. Show that A is not the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅ 𝐵𝐸 .
6. Show that D is not the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅ 𝐵𝐸 .
7. Find the coordinate of the midpoint of 𝐵𝐹 ̅̅̅̅ .
8. Find the coordinate of the midpoint of 𝐴𝐸 . ̅̅̅̅
9. Show that C is the midpoint of ̅̅̅̅𝐵𝐸 .
̅̅̅̅ − 𝐶𝐸
10. Show that 𝐶𝐹 ̅̅̅̅ = ̅̅̅̅
