For many of the Seabees, this
was their first deployment and
first time leaving the U.S.
The deployment “was lots of
hard work,” said Builder Con-
structionman Kasey Acosta, from
NMCB 3’s Det. Liberia. “This
was something that I would have
never experienced if I was never
in the Seabees.”
During the deployment, NMCB
3 completed more than 70 con-
struction projects.
In Monrovia, Liberia, the Sea-
bees built a laundry facility and
renovated a children’s ward at
Redemption Hospital.
“It was also kind of a beauti-
fication project,” said Acosta.
“The site looked significantly bet-
ter after the detachment left.”

Three visiting ships — one
from Spain and two from the
United States — will receive a
ceremonial welcome at Naval
Base Ventura County on Feb. 20,
with local dignitaries joining in
the festivities.
The three ships are participat-
ing in U.S. Navy Combat Systems
Ship Qualification Trials
(CSSQT). They are visiting
NBVC and Port Hueneme Divi-
sion, Naval Surface Warfare Cen-
ter (PHD NSWC), as part of
their international fleet qualifica-
tion and training exercises.
The Spanish SPS Alvaro de
Bazan (F 101) and the United
States’ Dewey (DDG 105) and
USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108)
are scheduled to arrive at Port
Hueneme on Feb. 19 for a series
of technical briefings by PHD
NSWC, social events and good-

Our Public Works and Safety departments are
researching signs and lighting for the crosswalks at
Point Mugu. The plan is to improve the crosswalk at
the Navy Exchange, between 8th Street and Mugu
Road. We will also look at the crosswalk near the
base theater. The project is scheduled to begin once
planning is completed and when funding is avail-
able.

Looking back
Navy divers
envisioned
underwater
living quarters
Oct. 1, 2010, marks the 10-year anniver-
sary of the establishment of Naval Base
Ventura County, the official date that Na-
val Air Station Point Mugu and Construc-
tion Battalion Center Port Hueneme com-
bined under a single commander.
In recognition of the anniversary, The
Lighthouse is publishing these “Looking
back” items that detail the history of the
two bases leading up to their unified com-
mand and that recall the major news of the
last 10 years.

On Jan. 18, 1973, the Ventura Star-Free
Press (now the Ventura County Star) ran
this feature headlined, “Navy divers: Men
with a mission.”

Many regard diving as a glamorous
sport. To the men of the Port Hueneme
Naval Civil Engineer Laboratory Diving
Locker, it is a profession.
To these men, diving is a serious, often
dangerous business that can never be
taken lightly. NCEL divers are involved
in development of an undersea technol-
ogy that will someday lead to utilization
of the ocean floor, perhaps even undersea
habitats, where people can live for extend-
ed periods.
“Our mission,” says Lt. Geoffrey D.
Cullison, diving officer, “is to assist the
lab in its ocean engineering program,
which includes projects involving under-
water construction, observation, evalua-
tion and development of tools and equip-
ment.”
Laboratory divers are particularly im-
portant in the NCEL program to develop
underwater tools. For obvious reasons,
tools designed for land use will not func-
tion under water without modification.
Special tools must be developed and
tested for diving force, buoyancy factors,
durability, length of operation and con-
venience for the diver. The men of the

she and Bryant had for her: to finish her
degree. She completed not only a bachelor’s

Both found meaning and connection when
they discovered the American Widow Proj-
ect (www.americanwidowproject.org). This
organization helped them connect with oth-
ers experiencing the same loss. They found
what they call “wise owls,” those widows a
step ahead in facing their loss, in building
their new life.
Both Deb and LaNita say you never “move
on,” as moving on somehow infers “forget-
ting.” They say they “move forward.” They
remember and honor their soldier, keeping
him alive in their hearts as they build new
lives without them.

think about losing my husband, but now I
know if I do I will not be alone and I have
others to look up to.”

Family Housing, Lincoln win service awards

Four neighborhoods at Na-
val Base Ventura County have
received “A-List” awards for
scoring high on customer ser-
vice and satisfaction surveys.
Three of the neighborhoods
— Coral Sea Cove at Port Hue-
neme and Point Mugu’s San
Miguel and Santa Rosa — are
operated by Lincoln Military
Housing. The fourth — Point
Mugu’s Santa Cruz — is run
by Military Family Housing.
“These scores are a signifi-
cant improvement from prior
years,” said George Percy, di-
rector of Military Housing at
NBVC. “Family Housing and
Lincoln Military Housing staff
have put a lot of effort into this,
and the Navy has put a lot of
resources into enhancing the
level of customer satisfac-
tion.”
Percy cited several areas that
have improved:
• Response time for repairs.
In the past, Percy said, it could
take as long as 24 hours to get
someone out on a repair call.
“We’ve reduced that to two
hours,” he said, “and we have
a 24/7 hotline.”
• Curb appeal. From play-
ground upgrades to flower
beds, the neighborhoods simply
look better, Percy said. “We
implemented lawn care for the
front yards, and that’s made a
huge difference,” he said.
• Energy efficiency. Many of
the homes have had kitchen ap-
pliances and windows replaced
to improve energy efficiency.
• Upgrades. Some homes
now have upgraded carpet, new
patios, new linoleum flooring
and new concrete driveways.
Percy said it’s important to
the Navy and to him person-
ally that families like their liv-
ing quarters.
“It helps reduce the stress in
families, especially when some-
one is deployed,” he said.
Peter Faulk, manager of Mili-
tary Family Housing, said the
next emphasis will be on roof
inspections and upgrading all
parks and playgrounds.
The customer satisfaction sur-
vey was conducted by CEL &
Associates, which created the
National Real Estate Customer
Service “A-List” award. The
award is bestowed on properties
that achieve the highest level and
quality of service as rated by their
residents. To earn the award,
neighborhoods must have a ser-
vice score of 85 or higher out of
100 possible points, and at least
20 percent of residents must re-
spond to the survey.

VAW-113 mourns loss of Andy Kaloz, popular ‘Sailor’s Sailor’

A teacher, a friend, a leader — but most
of all, a Sailor’s Sailor.
Speaker after speaker at a memorial
service on Feb. 12 recalled Master Chief
Aircraft Maintenanceman Andy Kaloz of
the Carrier Airborne Command and Con-
trol Squadron VAW-113 Black Eagles with
those words and many more.
“I never left an encounter with him
without learning something new,” said
Cmdr. Glenn Jamison, commanding of-
ficer of VAW-113. “I always enjoyed talk-
ing to him.”
Kaloz, 41, died Feb. 9 of a heart attack
shortly after a workout at the gym. His
death stunned his co-workers, many of
whom had seen him appearing healthy at
physical training just minutes before his
passing.
“Only the Lord has control over our
lives,” Master Chief Jeremiah Montanez,
the commanding master chief for VAW-
113, told the crowd of about 100 Sailors
and officers who gathered at the Point

Several speakers shared a laugh over
Kaloz’ well-known sense of humor.
“He’d want us to laugh,” Beverslius said.
“He always had a smile.”
Kaloz, a native of Lansing, Mich., joined
the Navy after graduating from high school
in 1987. He became an aviation structural
mechanic (hydraulic) and received addi-
tional training on the structural complex-
ities of the Hawkeye.
His first operational tour of duty was
with the Sun Kings of VAW-116. In Octo-
ber of 1996, he received orders to the VAW-
113 Black Eagles, and the squadron de-
ployed to the Western Pacific and Persian
Gulf.
After several assignments and promo-
tions, Kaloz returned to VAW-113 in May
of 2009. He led the maintenance depart-
ment through his final combat deployment
in support of Operation Enduring Free-
dom.
Jamison first met Kaloz in 1996, and
through those years, Kaloz’ reputation for
excellence never diminished.
“He was an expert at his craft,” Jamison

pride.”

But perhaps it was Master Chief Joe
Murphy who said it best:

 Hails and farewells bittersweet time in the Navy

Hails and farewells are a routine part
of life in the military. Someone new is al-
ways reporting, and someone familiar is
always detaching. And if you are in the
military, often that “someone” is you.
Leaving one duty station and reporting
to another is a bittersweet experience. On
the one hand, it is bitter when you must
leave behind the people you have grown
close to at your present duty station. These
are the men and women with whom you
worked, laughed, deployed and served.
You formed with them not only profes-
sional relationships but close friendships
as well. It’s always hard to leave behind
your friends when you move.
On the other hand, the upcoming “hail”
can be a sweet experience. You might re-
ally be excited about the next duty station
you are reporting to. Maybe it is in a part
of the country that you really enjoy. Pos-
sibly, you’ll be closer to extended family

at your new duty station. Or perhaps you
are really looking forward to beginning a
new job. There is no denying the element
of excitement that is part of the “hail”
experience.
I’m about to have my own “farewell and
hail” experience. I arrived here on base as
a mobilized reservist on July 13, 2009.
And, after eight months of active duty
service, I am about to depart in mid-March
and return home to my family and church

shorter than the typical three- to four-year
length of stay at a duty station. But my
time here has been long enough to form
friendships and to experience the fulfill-
ment of contributing to our reserve regi-
ment’s mission. So, even though I am
looking forward to the sweetness of re-
turning home to my family and church, I
am still experiencing a bit of the bitterness
of a farewell to friends and meaningful
service. (Oh, and I’ll miss your great
weather too. Best winter I’ve ever had!)

Feb. 26 Hueneme blood drive canceled
The United Blood Services blood drive
scheduled for Feb. 26 at Naval Base Ven-
tura County Port Hueneme has been can-
celed.
The next blood drive will be at Point
Mugu on Friday, March 12. The blood-
mobile will be at the baseball fields from
Scriptures of the Old Testament, we hear

Kindergarten registration has parents pondering options

As spring approaches, school districts
in Ventura County will be opening up
kindergarten registration for next fall’s
school year. It varies by district; however,
nearly all registrations will begin in
March.
For most parents of 5- and almost 5-
year-olds, there is no doubt that their child
is prepared to take the step into kinder-
garten. However, there are some parents
who still aren’t confident that their student
is ready for such a step. In California, le-
gal readiness is defined as the child turn-
ing 5 by Dec. 2. This means that a child
can start kindergarten at about 4 years, 9
months.
Although a child may be of the legal

 As NMCRS Fund Drive nears, Thrift Shop thrives

Just about every Monday, Dolores Dur-
nell stops by the Navy-Marine Corps Re-
lief Society (NMCRS) Thrift Shop at
Naval Base Ventura County Port Huen-
eme.
With her 1-year-old daughter, Rebecca,
growing fast, the E6 from Naval Mobile
Construction Battalion 3 has found the
thrift shop to be an economical way to
keep her family well-dressed.
“Every week I’m here looking at chil-
dren’s clothes,” Durnell said.
And she’s not alone.
Last year, an average of 32 people vis-
ited the thrift shop each day, with daily
sales averaging $425. In all, $35,195 was
raised for other NMCRS programs, such
as Budget for Baby classes and administra-
tive overhead.
“That’s $35,195 by selling things for a

quarter,” said Nadine Gamble, executive
director of the NMCRS at NBVC.
Bargains are everywhere at the thrift
shop, located in Building 829 on 15th Av-
enue. Open Mondays and Wednesdays
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the store is now
welcoming civilians with CAC cards the
last week of every month — Feb. 22 and
24 this month.
Volunteers run the store, with Mary
Wilson having chaired the project for the
last four years. She runs a tight ship, mak-
ing sure that all electronics work before
being placed on the shelves and that all
clothes are cleaned and toys washed. She
even has someone count the pieces before
putting jigsaw puzzles out for sale.
“We test everything that we possibly
can,” Wilson said.
As a result, the thrift store has a loyal
following.

year-old boy, Bobby, and a 2-year-old girl,

boogie board, still wrapped, was selling
for $5.
“It’s mind-boggling the things we get,”
Wilson said. “Some things have never been
used.”
Both the store and the wares are well-
organized. Wilson uses clear tape to wrap
related items — bedding, for example, or
napkins and tablecloths — and writes the
size and price on the tape so everything
stays organized and buyers know exactly
what they’re getting. There’s no rummag-

There’s an area for toys, another for
videos. Belts and ties hang in a hallway,
next to gift bags and beads. There’s a uni-
form shop and a large clothing room with
everything from ball gowns and tuxedos
to sweaters and leather jackets.
There’s even a holiday area that once
featured a 7-foot pre-lit Christmas tree.
Gamble said the staff regularly checks

Squadron 55 (VR-55) held a change of
command ceremony following the naval
service’s time-honored tradition.
The ceremony took place aboard Naval
Base Ventura County Point Mugu in the
squadron’s hangar bay on Jan. 30. Rich
with heritage and tradition, the heart of
the ceremony is the formal reading of the
official orders.
More than 275 squadron personnel and
guests were on hand to bid fair winds and
following seas to Cmdr. Kenneth E. Hob-
mann and welcome Cmdr. Thomas A.

Horses at The Equine Sanctuary in Ojai
have been through enough in their lives
without having to endure flooded stalls
and hoofs cracked by rocky terrain.
Now, thanks to about 40 volunteers
from Naval Base Ventura County, they
won’t have to.
Personnel from NBVC, Naval Mobile
Construction Battalion 40, VAW-112, Na-
val Construction Training Center, Force
Protection, the FOCUS Project and the
Naval Branch Hospital Clinic at Port Hue-
neme pulled up to The Equine Sanctuary
in four vans on Jan. 15 to begin a hard
day’s work digging trenches, installing a
French drain, moving water lines and a
spigot and cleaning up open areas.
“We thought we were just going to paint
a barn,” said RP2 Spencer Fry, who orga-
nized the project as one of the eight to 10
community outreach projects performed
yearly by the chaplain’s office. “But once

we got there, it was a different story. We
saw there was a lot more that needed to
be done.”
The contingent arrived shortly after tor-
rential rains had made a mess of the sanc-
tuary. The barn suddenly became last
priority.
“The whole area would have flooded
with the next storm if we hadn’t done this

schools in the ultimate school rivalry as
they attempt to design a miniature missile
from ordinary office and household sup-
plies, and then launch it at a target before
a panel of judges comprised of Navy and
civilian engineers.
Aided by a math or science teacher and
a PHD NSWC engineer, the students en-
gage in a variety of rocket science concepts
such as aerodynamics, trajectory and pull
of gravity.
PHD NSWC developed the competition
as a way to help local students with an
aptitude for math and science discover the
world of engineering and expose them to
the kinds of problem-solving challenges

“The Seabees knew what they were do-
ing, but not the rest of us,” Fry said. “We
all did it anyway, and it all worked. We
got everything done that we set out to
do.”
And the barn? “We saved that for an-
other time or another group,” he said.

dents will tour the Surface Warfare Engi-
neering Facility, where they will be given
the opportunity to see how engineers use

with their PHD NSWC engineer on their
project and conduct test launches to per-
fect their designs. The student teams will
then present their projects and design ra-
tionale to the panel of judges.

In addition to their work with tool test-
ing and underwater construction projects,
NCEL divers assist in underwater exper-
iments of various kinds, placing retrieving
samples and maintaining underwater sur-
veillance during the tests.
“We’re versatile,” says William J.
Schleigh, acting master diver. “We do our
primary mission plus virtually anything
that involves going under water.”
“If something falls off the pier, we go
in after it,” Lt. Cullison adds with a
grin.
Each man has a primary skill in addition
to his diving expertise. Some are builders,
some are construction mechanics and
some are equipment operators. Others are
electricians and enginemen. These men
have learned to use their primary skills in
the context of underwater work.
As divers, the men of the NCEL locker
have many levels of expertise. There are
two diving officers, one acting master
diver, three first class and three second
class divers. Each man has his special
training and his specific responsibility to
the overall team effort.

Parisi are the diving officers. They have
overall responsibility for diving missions
and for coordinating scientific require-
ments for each mission.

Acting Master Diver Schleigh super-
vises all diving operations. It is his job to
know how deep each man can go, how
long he can remain at that depth with
safety, and what types of tasks he is ca-
pable of handling. Chief Schleigh is
equipped for his job with the highest pos-
sible diving rating, that of aquanaut, or
saturation diver. This means that he is
qualified to dive with mixed breathing
gasses and to stay underwater for extend-
ed (saturation) periods.
First Class Divers David P. Sizemore,
Larry G. Hecht and Joel C. Hierholzer
have qualified for their positions by suc-
cessfully completing a total of 27 weeks
of training in the use of both lightweight
and “hard hat” gear. This training quali-
fied them to depths of 320 feet.
Aaron R. Sutton, Lindsay F. Bodwell
and Thomas W. Johnson, second class
divers, are qualified through a 10-week
course to dive in lightweight and hard hat
gear to depths of 150 feet.
NCEL divers have maintained an ac-
cident-free record throughout the five
years of their operation.
Reliability is all-important because ev-
ery diver is not only responsible for his
own underwater survival, but for the safe-
ty of his fellow divers.
“If you’re in trouble underwater,”
Schleigh sums up, “you want to know
somebody’s there who won’t let you
down.”
Top bowler is Athlete of the Month

This month, the Morale, Welfare
and Recreation Athletic Branch has
nominated Mike Elliott as the Athlete
of the Month.
Mike has more than 20 league bowl-
ing rings, more than 17 games at 300,
five 800 series, and holds the highest
average bowled at NBVC Lanes with
a book average of 226 for the bowling
season of 2008-09. He currently has
the highest series ever bowled at 824
at Naval Base Ventura County.
He recently won a four-game tour-
nament at NBVC with a total score of
1,056 for four games.
So how does one begin to bowl so
well? Mike began his bowling career
at the age of 4 in Washington at the
Banger Base bowling alley, where his
father was an assistant. Mike used to

Mike, one can tell right off the bat
that he is very knowledgeable in the
sport, but it’s also clear how much he
simply loves the game of bowling.

Power hitting with the Navy

Petty Officer 2nd Class Ray Judy wants
every baseball player who’s ever thought
about joining the military to know some-
thing: You don’t have to give up the sport
to serve your country.
Judy should know. For eight years, he’s
mixed baseball and the Navy to great suc-
cess, spending up to five months of every
year as part of the only joint traveling
armed forces all-star team and the rest of
the time on aircraft carriers or, most re-
cently, San Nicolas Island, working as an
aviation boatswain’s mate helping to
launch and recover aircraft.
Now, at 38, he’s convinced this is his last
year on the diamond.
“I’m retiring from baseball for good,”
says the second baseman and power hitter.
“I think it’s just time. I wanted to show
other young kids that this is possible – that

County Port Hueneme.
Rebecca Newton came in first with a
time of 18 minutes, 39 seconds, followed
by Kimo Zaiger at 19:53 and William Gos-
tage at 20:06.
Event organizer Kent Blankenship, ath-
letic director for Morale, Welfare and
Recreation, said the 5K runs are always
popular, with hundreds having taken part
in the five to six the office puts on each
year.
The next run is March 18, the Spring
Fling 5K, held in conjunction with a
health fair.

ROTA, Spain – Before coming home,
Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction
Battalion (NMCB) 3 helped extend a pier
and made several upgrades to increase
berthing capacity at Naval Station Rota
Spain.
A key part of this expansion was the
demolition of unused crane rail tracks,
which were embedded in the concrete
pier.
The 16-member crew used heavy con-
struction equipment, shovels and jackham-
mers to demolish nearly a mile of railing.
Cutting through concrete, reinforcing steel
and railroad tracks and persevering despite
challenging winter weather, the crew worked
long hours to complete the project.

“The project is a great opportunity to
show the Spanish navy who the Seabees
are and how hard we work,” said Utilities-
man Constructionman Steven Shapiro.
“We have been working in the rain and the
cold wind for weeks.”
The rains began in early December and
did not stop until mid-January. In Decem-
ber, Rota received almost double its normal
rainfall totals, and that trend continued into
January.

Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3
completed phase one of a sidewalk con-
struction project at Naval Station Rota on
Feb. 1.
The Seabees were tasked with construct-
ing a 500-foot-long sidewalk that will pro-
vide for safer movement around the station.

The project, divided into three phases, will
eventually contain a bike path and sidewalk
linking key areas.

the galley, Navy Exchange and other loca-
tions. Once complete, pedestrians will have
a safe and efficient path to travel that keeps
them off busy streets.

Throughout the project, Seabees learned
new skills, pushing themselves and their
shipmates, and developing skills they need
to function as a team.
“I started the project with great expecta-
tions, but after a couple of days with the
jackhammer, my body felt like it was about
to quit,”said crewmember Utilitiesman 2nd

Hospital ward dedicated to fallen Seabee

MONROVIA, Liberia — Before coming
home last week, 24 members of Naval
Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB)
3 attended a dedication ceremony for the
renovated Redemption Hospital Children’s
Medical Ward here on Jan. 28.
The detachment had been deployed to
Liberia since Sept. 7 for humanitarian and
civic assistance construction efforts. Dur-
ing that time, the Seabees and six Liberian
military engineers worked together to
build a new 600-square-foot laundry facil-
ity and renovate the children’s ward. All
construction was completed Jan. 25.
“It has been a great opportunity to work

worked hand-in-hand with Army engineers
to renovate schools under Army Task Force-
East initiatives.
In Serbia, a small team of Seabees worked
to renovate an elementary school.
In Cameroon, they built an ocean jet to
help the local special forces units with anti-
piracy operations, and they renovated bar-
racks.
In Uganda, a detachment of 30 Seabees
rebuilt two schools as part of the annual
East African Community’s (EAC’s) Natural

him. There was never a time he didn’t

“Seven Seabees from NMCB 3 and 43
engineers from the EAC worked on the proj-
ect,” said Sims. “We repaired a 12,000-
square-foot roof, we painted 30,000 square
feet of wall and we repaired 20,000 window
panes.”

Walter Gwenigale, the Liberian minister
of health and social welfare, to name the
new children’s ward in honor of Carrell.

escorted his remains to the burial in Port
Angeles, Wash., presented a plaque during

the Pledge” stations posted around
various components of Naval Base
Ventura County.
The base theater, Surf Net, Nap’s,
Duke’s, the gymnasium, the commis-
sary, the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters,
the Bachelor Officers Quarters, the
exchange and other locations will of-
fer pledge cards and drop-off boxes.
Each pledge will be entered into a
drawing where they can win some

After a team is selected and Judy begins
his temporary additional duty, the play-
ers will head to San Diego for spring
training.
The season, which runs through Sep-
tember, takes them across the United
States and throughout Central America,
playing 55 to 60 games.
The team is made up of the best first
responders and armed forces baseball
players from all branches of the military.
The program was founded back in 1990,
when each branch fielded its own team.

a designated hitter,” he said. “It’s time for
me to move aside. I want to play one last
time and end my career with a high note,
then move aside for all the young talent

Judy has been playing baseball since he
was 8 years old. A West Covina native, he
played all through high school and at pow-
erhouse junior colleges, then spent four
years in the minor leagues. He joined the
Navy in 2000 after an uncle told him the
Navy had a baseball team.

“I made the decision to enter — not to
see the world or get money for school like
everyone else, but to play baseball.”
Judy served twice on the now-decom-
missioned USS Constellation and once on
the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). He helped
launch the first F-14 Tomcats that bombed
Iraq.
“For a month and a half, we bombed,”
Judy recalls. “I launched over a thousand
sorties as a topside PO. It was a great mo-
ment.”
As soon as he returned to the United
States, on June 3, 2003, he reported for
baseball.
“I missed half the season, but I did OK.
