INTRODUCTION
This Documentation is addressed to qualified technical personnel who have experience with Selca
S4000 series numeric controls and Windows based operating systems.
The objective is to ensure the connection and configuration of S4000 NC on Microsoft networks (typically
WINDOWS NT, WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS 2000, WINDOWS 9x or Unix systems configured as
Microsoft network servers).
The Microsoft network connection option for S4000 series system is called SELNETWIN4000.
Only the numeric controls for which this option has been purchased can be used for network
configuration and connection.
The procedures herein described are independent from the NC software version used and only employ
dialogues and menus of the operative system which
The Numerical Controls S4000, Export Version “E” excluded, are subject to export controls according to Appendix I° of the
EU-Dual Use regulation.

1.1 CONNECTIONS
The currently used CAD/CAM milling system generates increasingly large files. This can cause
problems when transferring the files from one system to another if a communications network is not
available. For this reason, many users are asking to connect their machines to an Ethernet network.
Very often they realize this need only after purchasing the machine tool.
All S4000 systems are equipped with an integrated fast Ethernet network board which supports 10Mb/s
and 100Mb/s connections.
The SELNETWIN4000 option is necessary to connect the CNC to a network.
WARNING! If the optional module is not installed, the CNC can be configured to access the network
but will be disconnected when the CNC logs off. The configuration will be reset each time.
• Connection to the network must be made using a double twisted shielded wire, (preferable S-FTP –
shielded foiled twisted pair) class 5, minimum conductors 24AWG and RJ-45 connectors (8 wires -
4 pairs) shielded.
• The connection to the NC network board is made by inserting the connector in the system RJ-45
socket on the lower side of the metal cover on the back of the NC video unit.
• The maximum length of the NC wire to the concentrator (HUB) must not exceed 100 m.
• For correct operation, arrange the wire as far as possible from sources of electromagnetic noise (at
least 30 cm). Use network components providing adequate immunity. The NC and the other
network devices must be connected to an equipotential earth circuit to avoid the passage of
undesired currents through the wire shielding. Data transmission may be slowed down and even
blocked in extreme cases in the absence of this precautions.
The manufacturer will arrange the machine to be connected to the user's network or provide for laying
the wires at a later time.
Note the route of the cable: from the factory system hub, a Cat 5 shield cable (preferably S-FTP –
shielded foiled twisted pair) must lead into an electrical cabinet through a dedicated hole or socket
(separate from the power wires) and reach the operator panel where the numeric control PC socket is
located.
We stress that shielded wires and connectors must exclusively be used to make the wiring aboard the
machine tool in order to minimise interference with surrounding electromagnetic fields.
To provide a radical solution to this problem, SELCA offers a special type of cable studied to satisfy the
most demanding conditions of use in workshops: oil-resistant, anti-friction, certified flexibility sheath for
mobile laying, also in cable trays, and a complete range of accessories for making the connections.
CV-PRORETE: SFTP cable, one metre long, with male connectors for
connecting operator panel and control panel socket.

The KILLALL.BAT program will be started. Repeat the operation for at least three times in a row. This
program will kill all CNC software modules. It must be started several times because the various
modules have different time sequences which must be followed in order to be correctly shut down.
Check whether certain system "services" (following the next instruction) have been started:
point the cursor to each and confirm with “ENTER” to enter the property configuration dialogue.
Select “Startup Type” “Automatic” in the dialogue box that appears and confirm with “OK”
Computer Name
Any univocal name identifying the CNC in the
network
Workgroup
The identification of the PCs in the network
Domain
This option is normally exploited in large
networks and requires the presence and skills of
a system administrator for configuration.
The next step consists in configuring the transmission protocol. TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the set of the most common protocols and services used in network
system communications.
Click “Properties”.
Firstly, specify an IP address and a subnet mask which univocally identifies the NC on the network; this
data must be supplied by the administrator of the network to which you are connecting.
In the case of small networks not connected to the Internet, the IP address can be in range from
192.168.10.1 to 192.168.10.254 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Typically, the first three numbers of
the address will be the same and the fourth number will be used for univocal identification.
When a DHCP server is present in the network, you can select the "Obtain an IP address via DHCP"
option to obtain the connection address directly from the server.
These procedures require specific technical knowledge and are not included in this manual.
WARNING: Do not delete or edit any other protocols which may be present in addition to
TCP/IP.
You will be prompted to reboot the system. If the CNC software does not boot up correctly, shut the
system down again and switch the machine tool off by operating the master switch. The problem will
be solved at the next boot up.
Having ended the procedure, the CNC (with user privileges) can access the network server resources
and share the part program folder with other PCs (after setting up file share). See the following
paragraphs for details.
Point to the D:\S4000\PartProg directory, either right-click the mouse or press “Application” key (on the
keyboard between the left “Windows logo” key and the “CTRL” key). Select “Sharing..” in the pop-up
that appears. (See figure below)
A “Connect As:” user name and a “Password” will be usually required when you attempt to access a
CNC shared folder (“PartProg”) from the PC server.
To specify:
Connect as: “UtenteFinale”
Password: “Selca”
You can now connect to the previously shared folder for up and downloading part programs.
You can create a new CNC S4000 user corresponding to the users employed to access the server to
avoid entering the data above each time (see NETWORK ACCESS AUTHORIZATIONS below).
WARNING!
DO NOT CHANGE THE DEFAULT USER SET UP ON THE SELCA CNC. DO NOT
DELETE OR EDIT EXISTING USERS. SIMPLY ADD THE NEW USERS YOU REQUIRE.
The CNC may malfunction or be blocked if the data above is altered. A technical service
intervention may be required to restore original conditions.
Select “Map Network Drive” and the following window will appear:
Click on “Browser” and select the work group, the computer and the folder to be mapped:
Verify that “Reconnect at Logon” is available so that the resource connection will be re-established the
next time the system is booted up. In order to do so, the server must be on and the previously mapped
folder still available.
Press “Finish” to confirm.
At the end of this operation, the new network disk will appear:
After completing the operations above, a new disk will appear in the CNC edit environment dialog
(identified by the previous selected letter). This corresponds to the mapped folder where to transfer the
required program files (see figure below).
Note: Mapped disks cannot be seen in the "Machine tool" running environment for safety reasons. This
is because programs cannot be run directly from the network. Program must be copied to local
system in order to be run.
The KILLALL.BAT program will be started. Repeat the operation for at least three times in a row. This
program will kill all CNC software modules. It must be started several times because the various
modules have different time sequences which must be followed in order to be correctly shut down.
Select “Services”
• “Workstation”
• “TCP/IP Net Bios Helper”
• “Server”
• “Messenger”
• “Computer Browser”
Select “Startup Type” “Automatic” in the dialogue box that appears and confirm with “OK”
Go back to the service window and select “HW profile” for the activated services. Check that “status” is
“enable”. If not, select “Enabled” with the right button.
The next step consists in configuring the transmission protocol. TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the set of the most common protocols and services used in network
system communications.
TCP/IP is normally installed on S4000 system. Proceed as follows to configure:
Click “Protocols”:
Select “Shared As:”. Change suggested "Share Name". Press “OK” to confirm.
A “Connect As:” user name and a “Password” will be usually required when you attempt to access a
CNC shared folder (“PartProg”) from the PC server.
To specify:

DO NOT CHANGE THE DEFAULT USER SET UP ON THE SELCA CNC. DO NOT
DELETE OR EDIT EXISTING USERS. SIMPLY ADD THE NEW USERS YOU REQUIRE.
The CNC may malfunction or be blocked if the data above is altered. A technical
service intervention may be required to restore original conditions.
Open Windows NT Explorer (by pressing “Windows logo” + <E>). Locate the server in the “Network
neighborhood” and then the folder to be shared on the CNC interface. Select it and right-click the
mouse or press “Application” key (located on the keyboard between left “Windows logo” key and left
“CTRL”).
Select the name of the drive to be associated to the folder to be mapped (typically confirm the
prompted name).
Select “Reconnect at Logon” so that the resource connection will be re-established the next time the
system is booted up. In order to do so, the server must be on and the previously mapped folder still
available.

Some of the most common cases which typically occur when exploring the CNC SELCA S4000
network are illustrated below.
The following window will appear when a user attempting to connect is not automatically recognized:
Password: “Selca”
Specifically, you will need to create a new user corresponding to the SELCA CNC on the server to map
a network disk on a server in these operating systems. THESE ACTIVITIES MUST BE CARRIED OUT
BY THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
WARNING: The password and user name are case-sensitive. Remember to note upper and lower
case characters.
“Start”

shortcut menu that appears.
Compile the fields “UserName” and ”Password” as described above and select “User cannot change
password” and “Password never expired” and “Create” and then “Close”.
5. TROUBLESHOOTING
To run the Ping command: open “MS-DOS Prompt” on the CNC (“Start”, “Programs”, “Command
prompt”) and enter the Ping command followed by the server IP address.
Example:
C:\>ping 172.18.6.67 and press Enter to confirm.
A connection to the called computer cannot be established if the reply to the command is similar to that
shown below.
Check and if required reconfigure the “Microsoft TCP/IP” properties. Check the network wire and hub
connection (the latter usually is equipped with LEDs for verifying connection state).
In addition to the previous checks made through the PING command, the currently manufactured (only
with Windows NT) S404x CNCs are equipped with Intel PRO100+ network board, that provides other
diagnostic tools.
To proceed, point to “Network neighborhood” on the Windows desktop and press “Application” (located
on the keyboard to the right of the spacebar between the “Windows logo” key and the “CTRL” key).
Select “Properties” and “Adapters” in the pop-up menu that appears.
Point to the Intel PRO/100+ network board and then click on “Properties”.
