2005 Lowville Women’s Track and Field

Berry wins Federation Championship

Graduation hurt our team efforts this season, losing three of seven league competitions (two in
our division), but growth among the youth and Chelsea’s focus on the one championship that had
eluded her helped make this a memorable session. We missed a chance for our first sectional
title, finishing just three points behind CBA. We had the opportunities, and if I had to do it
again, there are changes I should have made, but I learned from my mistakes. I also picked up a
digital camera, so I wasn’t reliant on the newspaper for pictures.
Several memorable Berry moments during the 2005 season:
1. Chelsea (and her father) expressed a desire to run the 800 meters at the Frontier League
Championship meet against Nicole Lister, the defending division II state champion. I
tried to contact Julie Storms to see if we could set it up, but she was busy with family
issues that week and never read my messages. Ultimately, they both ended up in the
race, but Lister wasn’t prepared to see Chelsea next to her in the track.
Chelsea’s inexperience showed when she took a large lead in the first 100 meters, but
she quickly settled back and allowed Lister to lead for the next 400 meters. Chelsea
couldn’t restrain herself any longer and dashed in front on the back-stretch. She hit wall
in the final 50 meters, but held on for a nail-biter win and a school record.
2. Chelsea anchored to 4x400 relay at the Van Dusen Invitational. Our team wasn’t doing
as well as expected, and gave her the baton at least 80 or 90 meters behind Canton.
Chelsea closed the gap unbelievable quickly, passing Canton’s anchor 100 meters from
the finish. The memory still gives me goosebumps.
3. A 4x100 relay team was quickly cobbled together for the Open Qualifier. Our original
plan was to field a dominant 4x400 team, but two members of that squad opted for the
senior trip instead. A 4x100 team of Chelsea Berry, Amber Davison, Elise Kelly, and
Marisa Maring had a near-perfect run in the trials and broke the existing school record.
The finals oozed drama. Chelsea took the baton a full ten meters behind the VVS anchor,
but ended in a photo-finish that awarded the Raiders the title by one-hundredth of a
second. Chelsea appeared to be behind, but her lean was timed perfectly for the title.
4. A vocal Raider contingent occupied the bleachers at CNS for Chelsea’s 400 meter
Federation “victory lap.” A nearby spectator asked “Where is Lowville?” and was
greeted with a chorus of “We got no track” (sounds like a song title).
5. Chelsea dominated the Federation title run, finishing ten meters in front of the division 1
champion. We were informed that she had set a section III record in the process, but a
faster time eventually was found from the 1996 Onondaga League Meet. A most
gratifying weekend.
