Start Workbench Training Manual

• Start Workbench with a Mesh component system


• Go to Tools/Options panel and select Geometry Import.
Check the Named Selection box and delete any entries in the
Filtering Prefixes box so that it is empty. Hit OK. This will
allow Named Selections to transfer to Meshing

• Save As your project in your local directory

1. Geometry generation and parameter definitions


• In Project Schematic click on Geometry cell in order to launch DM. Set the length
unit to Inch
• Create a torus primitive on the XYPlane using the entries shown on the image.

Cylinder1.FD8, accordingly. Use the parameter name Elbow_Small_Pipe_Radius
for FD10. Generate

• Click the Check tab to test the parameterization. Change the parameters in the
Design Parameters tab to modify the parameterized geometry, click the Check
tab, then click on Generate to see the change on the graphics window. Once
you finish checking, restore the baseline dimensions and Generate

6. Save the project and Close DM


The parameters defined in DM are now shown in the Project Schematic when
you enter the Parameters Manager

7. Meshing
• From the Project Schematic click on Mesh
cell in order to launch ANSYS Meshing

• Change the units to millimeters from the
Units menu
• Click on Mesh from the Outline Tree. Go to
the Details of Mesh window, expand the
Sizing group, enable Curvature advanced

pipe as shown in the image

• You can include surface or volume integrals, fluxes, etc. as output parameters.

18. CFD Post


• In the Project Schematic window link a Results component to the Solution cell.
Double click on Results to launch CFD Post
• Go to Expressions tab and create a New Expression dpFLU to compute the
pressure drop between the outlet and the inlet1. Under Definition tab enter
massFlowAve(Pressure)@outlet - massFlowAve(Pressure)@inlet1. Apply. A l
RMB on dpFLU expression and select Use as Workbench Output Parameter.
The default expression icon will change to the icon

22. Design points


• You can give the task to Workbench to solve several points sequentially in batch-
mode with some geometry

• Schedule the new conditions in the Table of Design Points as shown in the image
below. Make sure to check the Exported box column if you want to create the
solution files
• Save the project with different name
• Then click on Update All Design Points, and wait …

• Click on the Expressions tab and insert a new expression named velocity1 and
set it equal to 0

• Create a boundary conditions named Inlet2. Repeat the previous step for the
boundary region Inlet2 and assign the equations velocity2 and temperature2 ,
accordingly
• Create a boundary condition named Outlet. On the Basic Settings tab, set the
type to Outlet and the location to Outlet. On the Boundary Details tab, set Mass
and Momentum to Average Static Pressure and enter
0 [Pa] for the Relative Pressure. Click OK to complete the BC definition
• Create a boundary condition named Sym. On the Basic Settings tab,
set the location to Symmetry XY Plane and the type to Symmetry.
Click OK to complete the boundary definition

29. Output parameters


• You can use CEL to define expressions for surface or volume integrals, fluxes,
etc which can be used for defining monitor points and also to define output
etc.
parameters in CFD Post. Click on the Expressions tab and insert a new
expression for the mass flow rate imbalance. Name the expression flux1 and
define it as:

Be careful to enter the expression exactly as shown – it is case sensitive


sensitive.
• Click the Outline tab and then double-click Output Control in the Outline. Click
on the Monitor tab and enable the toggle for Monitor Objects. Click on the New
icon next to Monitor Points and Expressions to define a new monitor for the
CFX Solver Manager. Name the monitor point Net Mass Imbalance. Set the
Option to Expression and enter the expression flux1 that you defined in the
above step in the entry box for Expression Value. Click OK to complete the
definition of the Monitor Point and close the Output Control window.

• In the Project Schematic right-click on the Solution cell in the CFX component
system and select Edit. When the Define Run form of the Solver Manager
appears, left-click Start Run to initiate the run. The run should converge

• Create a New Expression named dpCFX . This expression will compute an


average pressure difference between the outlet and the inlets. Define the
expression shown below. You can right-click while typing the expression to
bring up a dropdown which will let you select the massFlowAve function as well
as the Physics Locators (named boundary regions). When you are finished
entering the expression, click Apply

You can now transfer the defined expressions to Workbench. In the expressions

38. FLUENT and CFX case comparison


• You can compare the results from Fluent and CFX in CFX together if you have
licenses for both solvers
• Lets compare the results saved in step 19 (from FLUENT) and 33 (from CFX)
• You can perform this task in different ways:
a) Open the database saved in step 19 to start the comparison from Fluent results,
(or step 31 if you want to start from CFX results), or
b) Open

Schematic and double click on the Results cell to launch CFD Post, you can then
import sequentially the results from Fluent and CFX in CFD Post, or
c) Open a CFD Post standalone session
• All these options require to import sequentially the results from Fluent and CFX
(or vise versa) in CFD Post, accordingly
• Lets use the option a) starting from Fluent results. Double click on Results cell

• In CFD Post with Fluent results, load the CFX results from step 33. For that, go to
the correct directory where you saved the CFX results, select CFX result file,
keep the default options shown on the Load Results File panel and Open the file

• Create a new contour with the Default Domain Defaults (the Wall) location
• Once both results are now shown in CFD Post double click on Case comparison
• Make sure to check the Case Comparison Active box
• Keep the default under options
• Apply

• Click on Fit View icon


• Make sure to activate the synchronization buttons and to have the
Contours checked, accordingly

differences between Fluent and CFX results
