Introduction to ANSYS DesignModeler
• Goals:
– Modeling Operations.
• Revolve
• Translate
• Pattern
• Extrude
• Delete
– Decomposition.
• Slice
– Named Selections.
– Multibody Part
• Revolving a Sketch:
– Sketches are used as the base for 3D objects.
– Highlight Sketch1 and select the Revolve feature.
• The complete list of DM tools is available within the Create, Concept and Tools menus.
Common tools (such as Revolve) are displayed in the GUI.
• Translating a Body;
– To translate the body a Body Operation feature
will be used.
• From the Create menu, select Body Operation.
• Change Type to Translate.
– The Body operation feature contains common body
editing tools.
• Slicing;
– To assist meshing it is advantageous to slice
the body (decompose) into simple topological
volumes.
• From the Create menu, select Slice.
• The Slice tool is available when all bodies are
frozen.
• The two most common Slice types used for
decomposition are Slice by Plane and Slice by
Surface.
– Slice by Plane will use a plane to divide the body.
– Slice by Surface can be used to divide a body by a
selected surface that can be non planar. The slice
can be bound to the surface extents or extended
beyond the surface edges.
• Slicing (Continued);
– The body will be sliced into two regions using an existing surface.
• In the Details View, set the Target Face to the cylindrical surface shown in the central
image.
– To select obscured/internal faces the model can either be re-orientated accordingly or use
the Depth Picking Stack as shown below.
– Whenever more than one entity lies under the pointer, the graphics window displays a stack
of rectangles in the lower left corner each representing an individual surface in order of
depth.
Click Over Entity Position Select Desired Surface from Stack Apply Selection
• Slicing (Continued);
– Click Generate.
• Slicing (Continued);
– Use the same procedure to slice the outer body in two as shown.
– Select Slice from the Create menu and populate the Details View as shown.
• Since there are now multiple bodies Slice Targets will now be set to Selected Bodies.
Select the large outer body.
• Slicing (Continued);
– Switch back to the iso view and Click Generate.
• Slicing (Continued);
– Use the Slice feature again to slice the 2 outer bodies by the XYPlane as
shown.
– Select Slice from the Create menu and populate the Details View as shown.
• Slice Type should now be set to Slice by Plane.
• The Base Plane is selected from the Tree Outline as shown.
• Select the two outer bodies (use ctrl key while selecting for multiple selections).
• Slicing (Continued);
– Click Generate.
• Patterning Bodies;
– Now that the geometry operations are
complete, copies of the body can be created
using the Pattern feature.
• From the Create menu, select Pattern.
• Change the Pattern Type to Circular.
• Named Selections;
– Named Selections can be used to group entities
together.
• Ensure the Face Selection Filter is active.
• Select the three faces as shown.
• Click RMB and select Named Selections
• A Named Selection feature will be inserted into the
Tree Outline.
• In the Details View, apply the Selection.
– Click Generate.
– Click Generate.
• Extrude Feature;
– Create an extrusion of the new sketch.
• Select the Extrude feature.
– DM will automatically return to Modelling Mode.
• The Base Object is already set to the new
sketch (Sketch2) since this was the last active
sketch.
• Set Operation to Add Frozen and Depth to
100m.
• Deleting Entities;
– Remove the three cylindrical bodies as
shown.
• Select Body Operation from the Create
Menu.
• In the Details View set Type to Delete.
– Click Generate.
