4. The mortar joint thickness shall be the same as the rest of the works.

3.5 SITE QUALITY CONTROL/ TOLERANCES

A. General

1. Engage special inspectors to perform tests and inspections and prepare reports. Allow inspectors
access to scaffolding and work areas, as needed to perform tests and inspections. Retesting of
materials that fail in accordance with specified requirements shall be done at the Contractor's
expense.

2. Undertake all on-Site testing specified herein, which shall be carried out by an independent testing
body accredited by the relevant Approving Authority.

B. On-Site Testing

1. Testing Mortar

a) Testing of mortars shall be carried out in accordance with BS EN 1996, BS 4551 and BS EN
1015, or to equal standards acceptable to the Engineer.

b) All testing shall be carried out by a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accredited
laboratory or acceptable equivalent.

c) Specimens for preliminary tests of the mortars shall be prepared at least 6 weeks in advance
of any walling commencing.

d) All material sources shall be identified to the Engineer for acceptance prior to commencement
of preliminary tests.

e) Samples shall be taken at the point of mixing or use.

f) Additional tests and sampling shall be performed if the mortar does not comply with the
Specification.

g) Subject to the test results, the specified nominal mix proportions shall be adjusted and tested.

h) Unless acceptance can be obtained to the contrary, the consistency of fresh mixed mortar is
the standard recommended in BS EN 1015: Part 4.

i) Half of the samples shall be tested at 7 days, the remainder at 28 days. The 28-day crushing
strength of the cubes shall not be less than 3.6N/ mm² for the preliminary test and 2.5N/ mm²
for the work test.

j) Tests for cement content shall be carried out using a method as agreed with the Engineer.
Tests shall be instructed by the Engineer.

C. Installation Tolerances

1. The maximum permitted/ acceptable deviation from the required dimension of the masonry shall
be in accordance with BS 8000: Part 3, unless specified otherwise below.

2. Permissible Deviations

a) Position in plan of any point in relation to the specified building reference line and/ or point at
the same level: ±10mm.

b) Straightness in any 5m length: ±5mm.

c) Verticality up to 3m in height: ±10mm.

d) Verticality up to 7m in height: ±14mm.

e) Overall thickness of walls: ±10mm.

f) Level of bed joints up to 5m (block masonry): ±13mm.
