10. The 3 phase series reactors to be connected in series with each capacitor stage for harmonic current
suppression and to prevent resonance should be of iron-cored type with copper windings. The
current rating of the reactors should be increased suitably to take into account the effect of harmonics
in the network which could be generated by variable speed drives, elevators, UPS systems, fax
machines, computers, fluorescent discharge lamps, etc. The offered reactors should undergo tests
wherein the reactors should be subjected to harmonic currents generated by harmonic generating
test equipment. The magnitude of these harmonic currents should correspond to the harmonic
current magnitude in the network.

11. The capacitors and the reactors combination should be tuned below the lowest harmonic present
in the network. With the capacitors and suitable series reactors connected it should be proved
through submission of relevant calculations that the Total Harmonic Voltage Distortion is within the
limits as specified in IET guidelines, standards on IET recommended practices and requirements
for Harmonic Control in Electric Power Systems.

12. Three phase HRC fuses shall be provided for each capacitor step and mounted on fuse bases.
They shall be of modern industrial design, current limiting type and with a breaking capacity of over
100 KA. They should have a current rating of between 1.7 to 2 times the rated 3-phase capacitor
unit current. They shall be tested as per IEC 60269 with a test voltage 1.1x Un. The utilization
category shall be 'gG'. They shall be plug in type with suitable handle to ensure safe operation to
personnel. The fuses shall not be exposed under normal operating conditions.

B. Capacitor Units

1. The heavy duty capacitors shall be low-loss units, tested in accordance with IEC 60831. Each
element shall be made of dry self healing metalized polypropylene film and housed in an aluminum
can. Each capacitor shall be equipped with discharge resistors and an overpressure disconnect
device.

C. Capacitor Enclosures

1. Capacitor bank shall not form a cubicle of the main LV distribution board and shall be designed for
rack mounting of capacitor steps.

D. Reactor

1. Reactor shall be three phase, iron core, dry, impregnated and built with copper windings. All parts
of the reactor shall be covered by a varnish preventing corrosion and shall comply with IEC 60076-6.

2. Capacitor bank shall form a cubicle of the main LV distribution board and shall be designed for rack
mounting of capacitor steps.

E. Capacitor Steps

1. All rack mounted capacitor modules to be equipped with standard HRC Form 1 fuses, contactors
approved for capacitor switching, current limiting reactors, distribution blocks, discharge resistors
and capacitor elements. Capacitor bank shall be designed to allow for switching at fixed step.

F. Power Factor Controllers

1. Controller, microprocessor based, to be self contained and mounted in door of enclosure. The
controller shall continually measure the actual phase angles, current amplitude and retain installed
kVAr step size to automatically switch capacitors "On" or "Off" as required. Other features shall
include:

a) Automatic initialization of power factor controller (phase angle location).

b) Automatic circular switching sequence (first step on is first step off).

c) Digital adjustable setting and display of target power factor for 0.85 lagging to 0.96 leading.

d) Digital display of power factor.

e) Digital multiplier for switching time delay.

f) Visual indication of capacitor steps energized.

g) Visual indication of capacitive/ inductive load.
