Question.

1:

a. Dan used an autocratic style of decision making wherein the decision maker is at the top

of the hierarchical structure who is "Dan" in this case against his team.

b. He did not view his team members’ buy-in as an important aspect for arriving at a

decision of relaying the instructions to them without being considerate to his team

members' thoughts and viewpoints.

c. It is understandable that given the nature of business, the work activities and roles have to

be very tightly structured, however, they will also have to be monitored and well-

controlled to ensure optimum command over the team's actions.

d. Dan also reminded his team of the disciplinary actions that might be taken against them if

they do not follow the rules which can further lead to dissatisfaction & demotivation

among his team members which might result in attrition and a considerable employee

turnover.

Question.2:

a. Harry is not appreciative of the simple things in his life, for example, his daughter

preparing a good meal for him. And in fact, is complainant of having the same lunch

three times in a row. Marv, on the other hand, is an optimistic individual who would

strive in whichever situation he is put in. For instance, while most of the employees do

not prefer the graveyard shift, he had discovered that it is enjoyable.

b. Dan's work behavior is counterproductive in nature. He is not bothered to observe &

adhere to the organization’s rules and would rather indulge is a performing the tasks on

his own without much considertaion to the work code and procedures. Marv on the other
hand, is a task performer. He is well aware of his key responsibility areas and would

strive hard to accomplish the tasks in the stipulated time frame.

Question.3:

a. Brainstorming: This would involve the group members to be verbally suggesting ideas or

alternative course of actions. Since this is relatively 'unstructured', the idea generation

process would generate useful alternatives which can be quickly put into action

considering the situation in hand.

b. Nominal Group Technique: This technique would take the brainstorming process one

step further by incorporating the element of "voting". However, it is critical that along

with the viting towards a particular alternative the team members would also support it

with relevant understanding so that everyone knows why it is the best choice.

c. Ranking: This can be used to rank and prioritize the course of actions to determine the

next step.

Question.4:

a. Through transformational leadership, the leaders will have to inspire, encourage and

motivate the team members to create change and be execute their actions in tandem with

the group's goals.

b. Encouraging participative decision making technique so that the employees feel that their

viewpoints are being well considered and they have a say in the overall decision making

process.

c. Undertaking the organization intervention of diagnostic activity wherein all important

information about the organizations’ state would have to be collated & recorded for
further analysis. These action plans are then communicated to the team members with the

intention of improving the overall health of the organizational system.

d. We can also undertake the process of sensitivity training which is aimed at changing the

members' behavior through unstructured group interactions wherein they can openly

express their views, beliefs, thoughts and gain empathy and better tolerance towards the

organizational rules and other team members
