What is a Carpenter?

This qualification provides a trade outcome in carpentry, covering work in residential and commercial applications.
 Occupational titles may include:
 Carpenter
 Carpenter and joiner.
The qualification has core unit of competency requirements that cover common skills for the construction industry, as well as a specialist
field of work.
The construction industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very
closely simulated workplace environment and this qualification requires all units of competency to be delivered in this context.
Completion of the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction
Work (ASCC 2007) is required before entering a construction work site. Achievement of unit CPCCOHS1001A covers this requirement.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in:

 30 units of competency:

 22 core units
 8 elective units.

Help

To have your skills and knowledge formally recognised in the national system, assessors must make sure you have the
skills and knowledge to meet the industry standard. This means you must be involved in a careful and comprehensive
process that covers the content of all unit/s or qualification/s you can be recognised for.

Assessment happens in a variety of ways. Being prepared can save you valuable time and difficulty and make the
recognition process stress-free for you.

Here are some tips and hints for you:

1. Be prepared to talk about your job roles and your work history. Bring a resume or jot down a few points about
where you have worked, either paid or unpaid, and what you did there;

2. Bring your position description and any performance appraisals you have from any Leadership and
management facilities you have worked in;

3. Consider the possibilities for workplace contact. Are you in a workplace that is supporting your goals to get
qualified? Would you feel comfortable to have the assessor contact your workplace or previous workplaces so
your skills can be validated?

4. Think about who can confirm your skill level. Think about current or recent supervisors who have seen you
work in the past 18 months and will be able to confirm your skills. The assessor will need to contact them. You
may also have community contacts or even clients themselves who can vouch for your skills level;

5. Collect any certificates from in-house training or formal training you have done in the past; and

6. You can speak with your training organisation about other ways you can show your skills in Leadership and
management facilities. These could be letters from employers, records of your professional development
sessions, employers or clients in related industries or government agencies, acknowledgements, workplace
forms (as long as they don’t show client details) or other relevant documents.

CANDIDATE INFORMATION
What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
RPL is the acknowledgment of skills and knowledge obtained through learning achieved outside the formal education and training
system and includes work and life experience including paid and volunteer work and skills attained through leisure pursuits such as
musical, mechanical or linguistic abilities.
RPL recognises any prior knowledge and experience and measures it against the qualification in which students are enrolled. The
individual may not need to complete all of a training program if he or she already possesses some of the competencies taught in the
program.
Who can apply for RPL?
Potential students seeking recognition for experience, skills and knowledge for which they do not hold a vocational qualification can
apply for RPL. The skills they want to get recognized may have been obtained through:
• Work experience
• Voluntary work
• While at school
• Life experience
• Sporting experience

Why you should apply for RPL

If you apply for RPL and your application is successful you could:
• reduce or eliminate the need for any training in skills and knowledge you already have;
• save time by not needing to attend any or a reduced number of classes and completing unnecessary work;
• save money because you will not have to buy textbooks and other learning material;
• complete your qualification in a shorter time; and/or
• advance to a higher-level qualification in a shorter time if desired.

How to prepare for RPL Assessment

To have skills formally recognised in the national system, assessors must make sure you have the skills and knowledge to meet the
industry standard. This means you must be involved in a careful and comprehensive process that covers the content of all unit/s or
qualification/s you can be recognised for.
Assessment happens in a variety of ways. Being prepared can save you valuable time and hassle and make the recognition process
stress-free for you.

The RPL Process

Step 1 – Provide information of your skills and experience

Complete each section and provide as much information of your previous experience in Certificate III in Carpentry as you
can. This is your first opportunity (and not the last) to provide proof of your variety of experience in the industry. Here you
can supply examples of your work history which could include:
• Any licences
• Brief CV or work history
• Certificates/results of assessment
• Photographs of work undertaken
• Diaries/task sheets/job sheets/logbooks
• Site training records
• Site competencies held record
• Membership of relevant professional associations
• Hobbies/interests/special skills outside work
• References/letters from previous employers/supervisors
• Industry awards
• Any other documentation that may demonstrate industry experience

Depending on the industry you have worked in, you may or may not have documentary evidence available. This should not
deter you from seeking RPL as the Assessor will work with you during the RPL process.

You will also need to supply contact details of two work referees who can confirm your skills in the industry.

Step 2 – A Conversation with your Assessor

An assessor will review the information you have provided (usually with you) and begin to match up your skills to the
units/subjects in the qualification. At this point, you will have the opportunity to discuss and identify your previous experience
with the assessor who will understand your industry experience and conduct a competency conversation with you. You will
be required to answer Certificate III in Carpentry related questions to identify your current skills.

Step 3 – A Practical demonstration of your skills

The assessor will conduct a practical skills test at your workplace (if appropriate) or at another suitable venue. This, again, is
an opportunity to demonstrate your level of competence. This assessment will be focussed on skills that are required in the
qualification. Your assessor will identify the skills that he/she will want you to demonstrate.

Further Steps
After the assessment, your assessor will give you information about the skills that have been recognized and whether you
have gained the full qualification. If you do have skill gaps, these may be addressed through flexible training and work
experiences as well as any training that you have successfully completed that can be matched against a set of industry
performance standards referred to as Unit(s) of Competency. These units are grouped together to form a specific industry
qualification, within the Australian Quality Framework (AQF). Each unit of competency is divided into elements (a set of
activities that lead to an overall achievement or demonstration of competence). Each of these elements is further broken
down into a set of performance criteria which give a more detailed description of the skills and knowledge you need to be
able to demonstrate. Matching your evidence against each of the elements/performance criteria will help you to reach your
qualification more quickly.

Confidentiality issues
It is important that sensitive information is not included as part of your Supporting Documentation (as identified in Section 6
and any other documentation you wish to use as evidence). You may need authorization from your supervisor to use some
of your evidence, so it is always best to check the privacy and confidentiality policies of the organization. Client names
should be deleted and financial figures or other personal details should be blacked out and made unidentifiable.

Access & Equity Policy

The aim of OIC’s Access & Equity Policy is to provide the opportunity for individuals to fulfill their training aspirations
regardless of age, culture, gender, location or whether they have a disability or are disadvantaged in some way.
Please see OIC’s Access and Equity Policy for more information.

Explanation of RPL documents contained in the Toolkit

a) Candidate Information and Self-Evaluation Forms: These documents are for the candidate to assess their suitability for
the RPL process, by asking them to consider each of the points and assessing their ability against the task. It can be broken
into smaller skill groups, clustering like activities together to enable ease of completion. It is then reinforced by the
Version 1.1 Page 7 of 32 January 2019

CPC30211 Certificate III in Carpentry
candidate’s supervisor’s comments, both against tasks and as a summary for each group. This serves as third party
validation of the candidate’s claims.
b) Third Party Report and Supporting Documentation: The third-party verification report is provided as a separate document
for referees, for example the supervisor, to confirm the candidate’s skills and experience in the qualification/occupation. This
is particularly useful in addressing Employability Skill requirements. It is important to note that third party reports are not
always available, and that Assessors are recommended to use their professional judgement to determine if this is a
requirement.

RPL Frequently Asked Questions

What type of evidence will I need?

 Qualifications and formal statements (evidence may include Statements of Attainment, Certificates, Diplomas
etc).
 Professional development and training (evidence may include staff development activities, training sessions,
one to one training by a qualified staff member).
 Work experience (list what you do or have done at work that meets the unit description-evidence may
include activities, duties, projects, letters of confirmation from employers, duty statement).
 Other experience and skills (list membership of organisations, voluntary work, community work or self-
employment, home business – evidence may include membership certificates, reference letter from clients).
 Samples of work based tasks or projects that demonstrate the knowledge and performance skills of the
various units.
 Third Party evidence that corroborates your evidence and substantiates your involvement and demonstrated
competency in the preparation or completion of the relevant duties or tasks.

How much does an RPL assessment cost?

 The initial expression of interest form contained a $250 administration fee to assess your suitability for
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
 All RPL Fee can be found here

How long is the RPL process?

The RPL process is typically a 6-week process from the point you submitted your evidence.

How can I finish everything in 6 weeks? You mean I can study everything in 6 weeks?

Our RPL program relies on the fact that you are experienced in your industry, and therefore already have the skills and
knowledge down pat. The 6-week RPL process is simply ‘converting’ your prior experience and on the job skills into
the subjects that are taken up in a regular classroom when completing the relevant qualification for your trade. This
does not mean studying an entire certificate or diploma course in 6 weeks! You should already have attained this
knowledge before attempting RPL. Remember we are assessing your skills and knowledge against the criteria spelt
out for each subject required to attain your industry qualification. If you are identified with any gaps in any of
the units, that would lead to gap training and assessment. The schedule and duration would vary as per the
gaps identified.

Will I get a transcript and certificate at the end of completion?

After completing the RPL you will receive a nationally recognised certification from OIC which will be accepted across
Australia and also qualifies you to work anywhere nationally. However, if there is a gap between your qualification
and the skills required for your course, then OIC will provide you with the gap training to meet the Australian
standards and skill components required for the successful completion of your course.

My experience is from overseas, can I still get qualifications in Australia?

The Australian Government provides a service for international students to have their overseas tertiary qualifications
recognised. An RTO can consider experience gained from overseas when evaluating an application for RPL. Evidence
must be validated in the same way as evidence produced form within Australia.

What if I don’t have proof of my previous qualifications?

Contact the learning institution where you completed the studies. They should be able to provide you with a copy of
your qualification. If that is not an option, you will have to discuss other ways with your assigned trainer in which you
can demonstrate your competence with your consultant.
Version 1.1 Page 9 of 32 January 2019

CPC30211 Certificate III in Carpentry

Can I use previous study as evidence?

Yes. However, it is important to be able to show that you have maintained and applied those skills in subsequent
years.

What happens if I decide to do an RPL but then discover that I don't have the knowledge and skills
needed (qualification/ Experience)?

All you need to do is telephone OIC and transfer from an RPL to a unit, and pay the difference between the RPL and
unit. If you submit an RPL and your Assessor makes it as Not Yet Competent due to not having sufficient skills and/or
knowledge, your Assessor will request you transfer to the Unit too. This will allow you to gain the knowledge and skills
required.
