1 General

1.1 Hot work permit is required for grinding works within the workshop or onboard the vessel. Other
requirements include the presence of fire watch and provision of fire extinguisher.

1.2 Wear safety goggles, ear plugs and safety shoes at all times when operating the grinder.

1.3 Do not wear any loose clothing or accessories.

1.4 Ensure the operator is properly trained and proficient in handling the task.

1.5 Check that the grinder has been inspected with valid inspection tags (30-days).

1.6 Check that the grinding disc is in good condition. Hand-tighten the disc if necessary. Replace the
grinding disc if found to be defective, with cracks or the thickness of the disc has reduced to about 25%
of its original thickness. Vibrating disc should not be used.

1.7 Ensure that the protective guard for the grinder is in place and in good condition at all times.

1.8 Check the electrical wiring of the grinder for loose connection or worn out condition. Report any defects
to the supervisor immediately.

1.9 If at any time, there are other incompatible works (such as painting or blasting) carried out in the vicinity
where grinding works are in progress, workers are to stop the works and inform the supervisor
immediately.

1.10 Keep the working surface clean and ensure that the surrounding area is free of tools and materials to
minimize tripping incident.

2 Safe Operation

1.1 Switch “off” the grinder before connecting it to the power source.

1.2 Hold the work piece securely while grinding.

1.3 Do not use excessive pressure during grinding to prevent breakage and flying fragments.

1.4 Do not operate the electric grinder in wet environment.

1.5 For grinding on overhead structure, use the brush provided to clean off the work piece after grinding.
Do not use the gloves for cleaning purpose. This is because the metal debris in the gloves may get into
the eyes if the gloves were subsequently used for rubbing the eyes.

1.6 Wait for the grinder disc to come to a complete stop before putting down the grinder.

1.7 Switch “off” the grinder when not in use or unplug the socket when carrying out cleaning, repairing,
servicing or inspection works.

2 Post Operation

2.1 Clean the work area after usage and maintain proper housekeeping.

2.2 Do not touch the grinder disc and work piece after grinding. Allow them to cool down first.
