NAME: _ CLASS:X SEC: DATE: _

1. Assertion : Corrosion of iron is commonly known as rusting.

Reason : Corrosion of iron occurs in presence of water and air.
Ans : (b) If both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct explanation of
Assertion.
2. Assertion : Brown fumes are produced when lead nitrate is heated.
Reason : Nitrogen dioxide gas is produced as a byproduct due to the decomposition
of lead nitrate.
Ans : (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

3. Assertion: In a reaction of copper with oxygen, copper serves as a reducing agent.

Reason: The substance which gains oxygen in a chemical reaction is a reducing agent

Ans : (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

4. The process involving a chemical change is called a chemical reaction.

Depending on the nature of reaction, i.e., the type of chemical change
taking place, the chemical reactions can be classified into various
types. One of theseis Decomposition Reactions. A student was
performing the following decomposition reaction for the preparation
of oxygen gas in the laboratory.

KClO3 KCl + O2
He recorded the observation as mentioned below. This observation was found to be
incorrect:
“It is a photochemical decomposition reaction and is exothermic in nature”.
(a) Write the correct observation.
(b) Balance the equation.
(c) Write another example of such kind of chemical reaction.
(d) Which of the following is not a chemical change?
i) Fermentation of grapes
ii) Liquefying of petroleum gas
iii) Burning of candle wax
iv) Electrolysis of water
4.
Ans a. It is a decomposition reaction and endothermic in nature.

b. 2KClO3 2KCl + 3O2

c. Example of any thermal decomposition reaction.
1
CaCO3 CaO + CO2
d. Liquefying of petroleum gas

5. A metal ‘M’ reacts with an acid according to the equation.

M + H+ M 3 + + H2
Which of the following is correct for metal M?
(a) Calcium (b) Aluminium (c) Barium (d) Potassium

Ans : Aluminium

6. Translate the following into chemical equations and balance them:

a. Potassium metal reacts with water to give a solution of potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
2K + 2H2O 2KOH + H2
b. A solution of calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon di-oxide to form a precipitate of calcium
carbonate and water.
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 CaCO3 + H2O
7. Why does a wall not immediately acquire white colour when a coating of slaked lime is
applied on it?
Ans: Slaked lime as such is not very white. When applied on the wall, CO2 gas present in air reacts with
calcium hydroxide. It is quite white and imparts white colour and shiny finish to the wall.
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 CaCO3(s) + H2O(l)
8. What is the role of oxidizing agent in a reaction?
Ans: An oxidizing agent either supplies oxygen in a reaction or removes hydrogen.
9. Solid calcium oxide was taken in a container and water was added slowly to it-
i) State two observations made in the experiment. ii) Write name and chemical formula of the
product. Ans: Observations: --Water will start boiling and hissing noise will be produced. (exothermic
reaction)
Calcium hydroxide will be formed
CaO(s) + H2O Ca(OH)2 + Heat

10. Name a reducing agent that can be used to obtain manganese from manganese di-
oxide. Write balanced chemical equation for the reaction.
Ans: The reducing agent is Al. It removes oxygen from MnO2 upon heating.
3MnO2 + 4Al 2Al2O3 + 3Mn
11. a. Explain redox reaction with an example. b. When a magnesium ribbon burns in
air with a dazzling flame and forms a white ash, is magnesium oxidized or
reduced? Why?
Ans: a. The reactions in which oxidation (loss of electrons) and reduction (gain of electrons) take
place simultaneously are called redox reactions.
CuO + H2 Cu + H2O

2Mg(s) + O2(g) 2MgO(s)

b. Magnesium is getting oxidized because it is losing electrons to form Mg2+ and oxygen is
gaining electrons to from O2-, therefore it is getting reduced.
12. The marble statues often get corroded when kept in open for a long time. Explain.
Ans: We all know that vapours of poisonous gases SO2 ,SO3 are being constantly releasing into
the atmosphere as a result of combustion of Sulphur which is taking place. These are dissolved
by rain water and results in formation of sulphurous and sulphuric acids. It is known as acid rain.
The acid reacts with the compound CaCO3 present in marble statues and so these get corroded.
SO3 + H2O H2SO4
CaCO3 + H2SO4 CaSO4 + H2O + CO2
13. A white salt upon heating decomposes to give brown fumes and a residue is left behind.
i) Name the salt. ii) Write the equation for the decomposition reaction.

Ans: i) Lead nitrate

ii) 2Pb(NO3)2 2PbO + 4NO2 +O2

14. . A water insoluble substance ‘X’ on reacting with dilute H2SO4 released a colourless
and odourless gas accompanied by brisk effervescence. When the gas was passed
through water, the solution obtained turned blue litmus red. On bubbling the gas
through lime water, it initially became milky and milkiness disappears when the gas
was passed in excess.
Ans: CaCO3 + H2SO4 CaSO4 + H2O + CO2 ( X is Calcium carbonate)
H2O + CO2 H2CO3, Ca(OH)2 + CO2 CaCO3 + H2O
CaCO3 + H2O +CO2 Ca(HCO3)2(aq) (milkiness disappears)

15. Why does not silver evolve hydrogen on reacting with dilute sulphuric acid?

3
Ans: Based on reactivity series silver is less reactive and placed below hydrogen.
So it cannot displace Hydrogen from sulphuric acid.
16. How will you test whether the gas evolved in a reaction is hydrogen?
Ans: Pass the gas or bring a burning splinter near the fumes. If the gas burns with a pop sound, it is a
confirmation test for hydrogen.
17. Aluminium is a reactive metal but is still used for packing food articles. Why?
Ans: Aluminium forms an oxide layer (Al2O3), it serves as an advantage to the food substance as
it deposits on the surface of the metal.

18. Why do silver articles become black after sometime when exposed to air?
Ans: Silver articles get corroded due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide present in the atmosphere.
19. Consider the following reaction: SO2 (g) +2H2S (g) 2S(s) + H2O(l)
a. Name the substance oxidized---H2S, b. Name the oxidizing agent---SO2
c. Name the substance reduced----SO2 d. Name the reducing agent---H2S
20. 2g of ferrous crystals are heated in a dry boiling tube.
a. List any two observations.
b. Name the type of chemical reaction taking place.
c. Write the chemical equation for the reaction.
Ans: a. Green colour of FeSO4 disappears and reddish brown solid is formed. Smell of burning
Sulphur
b. Decomposition reaction c. 2FeSO4(s) Fe2O3(s) + SO2(g) + SO3(g)
