Diffusion:
Diffusion is a mode of mass transfer, in which mixture of liquid or gas
transported from high concentration region to low concentration region.
There can be six combination of diffusion:

Gas
Gas liquid
Solid

Increasing of Diffusion rate

Liquid
Liquid
Solid

Solid Solid

Fig.1: Combination of Diffusion.

In gas-gas diffusion the diffusion rate is approximately 1⨯10-1 m2/s.
That means it takes 10s for the diffusion of 1m2 of gas or liquid
mixture.
Like this, in gas-liquid, in gas-solid, in solid-solid the diffusion rate
respectively 1⨯10-5 m2/s, 1⨯10-11 m2/s, and 1⨯10-20 m2/s.
The diffusion rate varies due to intermolecular movement of the mixture.
Diffusion in Binary Gas mixture:
1. Gas-Gas Diffusion: Gas-gas diffusion occurs when something is
sprayed into the air, the mixing of exhaust gas with air, mixing of
water vapor with air etc.

Fig.2: Gas-Gas Diffusion.

2. Gas-Liquid Diffusion: The dissolved oxygen (O2) in water is a

proper example of Gas-liquid diffusion. In air the amount of O2 is
210000 ppm but in water it is only 4 to 5 ppm. Fishes use their gill
for breathing in water. We blow on the hot tea, it is also an example
of gas-liquid diffusion.

3. Gas-Solid diffusion: Spraying body spray on human body, oxygen
(O2) dissolved by ameba and fungus, spraying chemical on corps or
in metal inspection process etc. are gas-solid diffusion.

4. Liquid-Liquid diffusion: There are many example of liquid-liquid

diffusion. such as milk and water, making tea, making juice etc.
when mainly two or more liquid are mixed then liquid-liquid
diffusion occurs.

5. Liquid-Solid diffusion: When we take bath or wash our hands or
anything solid then liquid-solid diffusion occurs.

6. Solid-Solid diffusion: Solid-Solid diffusion occurs between solid

bodies such as chalk and blackboard, color pencil and paper etc.
