HOMEWORK 3

1. Consider the sample 13, 19, 18, 20, 16, 9, 10, 7, and 8. Find the Mean.
Given:
Sample: 13, 19, 18, 20, 16, 9, 10, 7, 8
n=9
Solution:
⅀x
x=
n
13+19+18+20+16+ 9+10+7+8
=
9
120
= 9
= 13.333
Therefore, the sample mean is 13.333.

2. In a certain shopping mall, restaurant charge P140, P195, P125, P150, P200, P165, P175, P190,
P230, and P180 for a regular dinner. Find the average cost.
Given:
Sample: P140, P195, P125, P150, P200, P165, P175, P190, P230, P180
n = 10
Solution:
⅀x
x=
n
140+195+125+150+200+165+175+190+ 230+180
=
10
1750
=
10
= 175
Therefore, the average cost of a regular dinner in a certain shopping mall is P175.

3. A recent study showed that the cost of buying a typical “shopping basket” of 40 food items of
consumption at home was P8,100 in Makati, P5,100 in Manila, P6,600 in Mandaluyong, P6,150
in Pasay, P5,100 in San Juan, P4,900 in Pasig. Determine the mean of this data.
Given:
Sample: P8,100, P5,100, P6,600, P6,150, P5,100, P4,900
n=6
Solution:
⅀x
µ=
n
8100+5100+6600+6150+5100+ 4900
=
6
35950
=
6
= P 5991.67

Therefore, the mean cost of buying a typical “shopping basket” from the given data is
P5991.67.

4. Complete the table and find the mean for the grouped frequency distribution.
Given:

Class Limit f x Fx
1-5 1 3 3
6-10 2 8 16
11-15 8 13 104
16-20 5 18 90
21-25 4 23 92
26-30 3 28 84
TOTAL n = 23 ⅀fx = 389
Solution:
⅀ fx
x=
n
389
=
23
= 16.913
Therefore, the mean from the given data above is 16.913.

5. Adidas sold 210 running shoes for a regular price of P 5,000. For summer sale, the shoes were
reduced to P 3,500 and 150 were sold. At the final clearance, the price was reduced to P 2,500
and the remaining 80 were sold. What was the weighted mean price of adidas running shoes?
Given:

Regular Price Summer Sale Final Clearance

w1= 210 w2= 150 w3= 80
x1= P 5,000 x2= P 3,500 x3= P 2,500
Solution:
n

∑ wi xi
i=1
xw= n

∑ wi
i=1

( 210 )( 5000 )+ ( 150 )( 3500 ) +(80)(2500)

=
210+150+ 80
1775000
=
440
= P 4,034.09
Therefore, the weighted mean price of the adidas running shoes is P 4,034.09.
6. Fifteen companies were asked to how many charitable institutions they gave their cash donation
in 2016. The companies responded that they gave money of 18, 15, 16, 10, 14, 13, 17, 20, 23, 27,
20, 19, 18, 27, and 22. Determine the median of the data.
Given:
Sample: 18, 15, 16, 10, 14, 13, 17, 20, 23, 27, 20, 19, 18, 27, 22
n= 15
Solution:
 Arranged Data (Ascending)
10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 18, 19, 20, 20, 22, 23, 27, 27
 Middle Rank Value
n+1 15+1
Median (Rank Value) = = =8
2 2
 Median in the set data
10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 18, 19, 20, 20, 22, 23, 27, 27

8th of times the charitable institutions gave their cash

Hence, median in the number
donation is 18 times.

7. Consider the sample 18, 27, 30, 46, 50, 44, 52, 53, 61, 48, 35, and 51. Find the midrange.
Given:
Sample: 18, 27, 30, 46, 50, 44, 52, 53, 61, 48, 35, 51

Solution:

Data array: 18, 27, 30, 35, 44, 46, 48, 50, 51, 52, 53, 61,
xlowest = 18
xhighest = 61

Midrange =
xlowest + xhighest

18+612
=
2
= 39.5
Hence, the midrange is 39.5.
8. Measurement of the sizes of farms in the province of Zambales yield a mean of 3.48 hectares
and a median of 4.67 hectares. If the staff of the Department of Agriculture in the province of
Bulacan made wrong entries with a deficit of 1.23 hectares in all land owners, what are the new
value of the mean and median?
Given:
Old Mean = 3.48 ha
Old Median = 4.67 ha
Deficit = 1.23 ha
Solution:
New Mean = Old Mean + Deficit
= 3.48 ha + 1.23 ha
New Mean = 4.71 ha
New Median = Old Median + Deficit
= 4.67 ha + 1.23 ha
New Median = 5.9 ha
Hence, the new mean and median is 4.71 ha and 5.9 ha, respectively.
