[EN12Lit-Id-25] differentiate/compare and contrast the various 21st century literary
genres and the ones from the earlier genres/periods citing their elements, structures and
traditions.
LESSON 5.1: MINDANAO LITERATURE

The Mindanao literature shows the

diverse characteristics and
features of the culture of the Filipino
Muslims. Although Mindanao has a
diverse culture, they are still unified
because of their faith – Islamic faith.
It spreads in the different cultural
communities and in their folk literature.

Generally, the folk literature of

Mindanao follows the oral tradition.
Folktales, legends, myths, epics,
riddles, proverbs, and poems are
passed from generation to generation
by the word of mouth. In Mindanao’s
folk literature, the Muslim cultural
communities can participate.

They listen, react, and retell what they hear from one another. This ensures the
transmission of the folk literature among the cultural communities. The 13 major ethno-
linguistic groups of the Muslim communities are as follows:
 Jama Mapuns of Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi
 Iranons of Cotabato
 Kaagans of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental
 Kalibugans of Zamboanga
 Maguindanaos of Maguinadanao
 Maranaos of Marawi
 Palawanons of Palawan
 Molbogs of Palawan
 Samas of Tawi-Tawi
 Sangils of Sarangani
 Tausugs of Sulu
 Yakans of Basilan
 Bangingis of Tongkil and Zamboanga

These ethno-linguistic groups of Muslim communities, though unified by their faith, differ in
some aspects of their culture like the language, style, etc.

In this contemporary period, the Muslim groups is faced by the challenge of preserving and
conserving their folk literature for the next generations. The preservation will be ensured as
long as the natives and some scholars will continue to transmit their own folk tales.
