Principal Stresses and Strain

Q.1 Explain the Principal Stresses and Strain.

Q.2 A point in a strained material, the intensities of Normal stress across two planes at right
angles to each other are σ1 (Tensile) and σ2 (Tensile) and a shear stress of across the
planes. Calculate Major and Minor principal Stresses. Also find normal stress and
tangential stress on a plane inclined at an angle 35° with vertical in anti-clockwise
direction. Use analytical method.

Q.3 A point in a strained material, the intensities of Normal stress across two planes at right
angles to each other are σ1 (tensile) and σ2 (compressive) and a shear stress of across
the planes. Locate the principal Planes and evaluate the Major and Minor principal
Stresses. Also find maximum shear stress induced. Use graphical Mohr’s circle method.

Q.4 An element in a strained material as shown in figure 3. Find normal stress and tangential
stress on a plane inclined at an angle 25° with vertical in anti-clockwise direction. Also
find maximum tangential stress induced. Use (Graphical) Mohr’s circle Method.

Q.5 An element in a strained material, the intensities of Normal stress across the horizontal
planes and vertical planes are σ1 (Compressive) and σ2 (Tensile) respectively. And a shear
stress of as shown in figure 4. Locate the principal Planes and evaluate the Major and
Minor principal Stresses. And also find the max shear stresses. Use Analytical method.
