In each of the following examples – comment
on the possibility of using mathematical
modelling or analysis, explain the decision
context. Why is modelling needed?

Specify the data required and the steps to be

carried out for modelling. Please include
variables and equations (where possible)

Specify criteria to be used, if required. Please

be as specific as possible.
A hotel located on a hill station is
assessing the viability of a solar water
heating system for providing hot water
to the rooms (at present these are
supplied by individual storage geysers)
1. A renewable energy system is to be designed to
provide un-interrupted power supply to your hostel
for two hours.

2. It is proposed to introduce additional buses, if

needed in the IIT campus. Existing buses can be re-
scheduled. Decide number of new buses and
schedules.
3. The IIT main pump house has three large pumps of
known rating (different ratings for each pump) and
characteristics. There is also a storage tank of known
capacity. For a known water demand variation in the
campus, determine the operating strategy for the
individual pumps. IIT is on a time of use tariff
(electricity price different for different time periods)?
4. In the Thane Belapur industrial region there are
four large process industries located near each
other. Each industry has its own utility supply
system to provide process steam requirements at
different levels (temperature, pressure) and
purchases electricity from the grid. The daily
variation of steam is known. Should the industries
combine their utility operation?
5. A water pumping station in a rural area pumps
water from a natural reservoir to a tank at an
elevation (given height) and fills up the tank in one
hour. Normally the pump was operating with a
motor supplied by grid electricity operating at
constant speed. The area is receiving erratic power
supply and load shedding of 10-12 hours is
common. The electricity supply company has
asked the rural area to reduce its total electricity
consumption. A rural industry has agreed to donate
a diesel engine (specified rating). The tank must be
filled up in a maximum of two hours. Would the
engine meet the requirement?
6. A large software company is considering
options for a fleet of vehicles to operate within its
new campus in Pune. The options being
considered are
i) CNG vehicles ii) compressed air driven
vehicles. iii) Electric vehicles. Which option
should be chosen and why?

7.BHEL is making plans for its manufacturing

capacity expansion. How should it decide on the
future capacity of steam and gas turbines, boilers
etc for the next 10 years?
8. There is a proposal in Delhi to convert all
new private vehicles to Electric. How would
you assess the viability of this proposal using
a model?

9.The Indian government has announced targets

of 100 GW of Solar PV, 65 GW of wind and 10
GW of biomass by 2022. Assess the impact of
this on the electricity sector
10. Coal India Limited is making a strategic plan for the
next twenty years. How would you provide CIL an
estimate of the demand for coal in 2027?
