At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

 Develop fundamental understanding of the mechanics of concrete and steel. (C5)

 Formulate and analyze the concepts of non-linear behavior of reinforced concrete

structures. Formulate toward the development of design codes equations and
evaluate the capacity of steel structural members. (C6)

 Communicate effective ideas/strategies on the analysis of concrete and steel

members. (A5)

Course Description

This course will cover topics on advanced mechanics properties of materials of concrete
and steel which include stress fields, stress-strain relationship in 2D and 3D. It will
emphasize on elasto-plastic in reinforced concrete structures, unconfined and confined
concrete and finally, development of moment-curvature analysis using non-linear
behaviour of reinforced concrete.

The course will also emphasize on the advanced behavior of metal structures and
discuss the underlying mechanics behind the equations in the design code. The
fundamental mechanics pertaining to the strength and stability of metal structures will be
presented, and how the steel design code equations are developed based on these
fundamental mechanics.
