They are used to express CONTRAST or OPPOSITION

- ALTHOUGH / EVEN THOUGH + SUBJECT + VERB

Eg: Although I was tired, I couldn’t sleep all night.

- IN SPITE OF + NOUN - Eg: In spite of the rain, we played football.

- DESPITE + NOUN - Eg: Despite the rain, we played football.

- IN SPITE OF + ING - Eg: In spite of feeling afraid, she went on the roller
coaster.

- DESPITE + ING - Eg: Despite feeling afraid, she went on the roller coaster

- IN SPITE OF + THE FACT + THAT - Eg:In spite of the fact that she didn’t
study, she passed.

- DESPITE + THE FACT + THAT - Eg:Despite the fact that she didn’t study,
she passed.
