DESCRIPTIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR ASSESSMENTS

GROUP ASSIGNMENT I
Company practices on relations to recruitment and selection

Title
Recruitment and Selection Best Practices of a Competitive Organisation

Situation

Recruitment and selection is a process of searching for and obtaining potential job applicants
in sufficient quantity and quality so that employers can select the most suitable candidates to
fill in their job vacancies. In practice, there is no one best way or commonly agreed procedure
on how to recruit and select applicants because different employers have different recruitment
and selection methods depending on their operations, size and needs. It has been a common
practice for many employers to select applicants through face-to-face interviews and tests,
but an increasing number of employers are using other methods such as telephone interviews,
assessment centres and online testing. The methods of applicants’ recruitment and selection
used seem to vary according to organisational size and the number of applicants required, but
the process has generally become more rigorous and sophisticated as competition to obtain
applicants has increased.

GROUP ASSIGNMENT II
Current issue on recruitment and selection

Title
Recruiting and selecting people with disabilities: What employers can do?

Situation
Most people with a disability wish to work but have difficulty obtaining employment. It is
possible that certain individuals who feel stigmatised may shy away from applying for certain
jobs. Employers may also misattribute stigmas and may not hire such people given various
reasons such as assumptions about lower skill or ability level, lower job performance, and
about adverse customer or co-worker reactions. Thus, both recruitment and selection
practices have to be managed carefully. Channels of recruitment, or where the employer
recruits, can influence how discriminatory the recruitment process is.
