Human Resources Department

I am writing to apply for the position of TTOC with your district starting in September 2021. I have many
years of experience working with students with a variety of abilities and exceptionalities. My goal as a
teacher has always been to help kids most in need by finding ways to reduce barriers so that they can be
successful in their education.

I started my career at Heritage Park Secondary School in Mission BC as a Senior Resource teacher
working with teenagers with severe learning disabilities. In that situation I created a stable learning
environment for the students with learning problems. I created a curriculum of Science, Math, Language
Arts, and Social Studies that was accessible to all students with exceptionalities.

Then I moved to New Westminster Secondary School as a special education/resource teacher with the
responsibility of maintaining a case load of 25 students with various learning concerns. I was tasked with
maintaining sensitive educational records, file reviews, preforming level A/B testing, tier one classroom
test support, and assisted with course selection. I was also responsible for creating and providing special
educational classes for students with Learning Disabilities and mildly Developmental Disabilities in
Language Arts, Math, and Career prep.

After five years I moved into mainstream teaching, picking up course in Social Studies and History for
both neuro typical and neuro diverse high school students. There I taught SS 9, SS 10, SS 11, and History
12 and preparing senior students to write provincial government exams.

In 2015, I took a break from teaching and moved to the United Kingdom, taking up a position at the Solent
University in Southampton as a Dyslexia Advisor. There, I worked with a team of other highly skilled
educational professionals providing support to University Students and Junior Maritime Cadets with
Learning Disabilities. I worked to provide students with learning strategies, coping skills, funding
solutions, educational assessment, and assistive technologies within a university setting.

In 2016, I returned to New West Secondary School with a renewed sense of purpose where I taught
regular Social Studies courses that were welcoming to all students.

In 2019 I decided to return part time to University and enrolled n UBC’s Special Education Master’s
degree program with a focus on Learning Disabilities. This was a journey of self-discovery as I have a
learning disability myself and wanted to know more about it. I want to be able to help other people with
disabilities to understand the nature of the disability and to help then unlock their potential. I was so
impressed with the work that is going on in the UK of trying to reduce barriers for disabled people that I
wanted to be a part of the movement.

I want to thank you for your time and consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any
questions or inquiries you may have. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours

Mike Parker
