THE IMPACT OF SELF LEARNING TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF GRADE-11 STUDENTS OF BALUCUC HIGH SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

In our modern society, a good learner should be capable of integrating knowledge

from different sources, lifelong education and self-learning in ordered to be successful in

school and in life. In this season of Pandemic, the Department of Education (Dep-Ed)

imposed three new modalities for education because the face-to-face teaching is

prohibited. The aims of the is to identify the impact of self-learning to the academic

performance of the grade 11 students. Using one of the three modalities of learning that

are ways to navigate the students through the steps that are needed to provide such

knowledge and skills for their school performance and the three modalities of education

will require self-learning. Previous research explains how dominant self-learning can be

if the students is fully engaged in the self-learning. This study uses a quantitative

approach, with a descriptive methodology. We will use online surveys and observations

to the grades of the participants that will be all conducted through online, and the data

analyze using thematic analysis. What will be emerge from this analysis of the Impact of

Self-learning to the Academic Performance of the participants in self-learning of the

Grade 11 students in Balucuc High School, in the further observation the good effects of

self-learning explicated through three main themes: (1) coping with changing ways of

gaining knowledge, (2) the impact on their being independent, and (3) attitude. The

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

What is the importance of learning in this season of a pandemic, and how students

can still learn and achieve their academic goals despite a lack of confidence in self-

learning? According to DepEd official: Close to 4 million learners did not enroll for this

school year due to COVID-19 crisis “we have extraordinary non-participation on account

of COVID as of today that is about 4 million learners,” DepEd Undersecretary

Nepomuceno Malaluan told the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture

during a hearing on blended education. Since August 11, over 23 million enrolled in

public and private schools for calendar year 2020 to 2021, Malaluan said the enrollment

rate is around 83.1 percent the of last year’s figure of 27.7 million. The official said most

or 2.75 million of those who did not enroll used to go to private schools. Meanwhile, over

1 million students who attended school in public basic educational institutions last school

year have not registered for this coming academic calendar. Most of the student prefer the

modular learning than online. In this mode of learning it requires the student to have a

critical thinking and understand the modules that will be given to them.

Senior High School environment for most of the young teenagers is often

recognized as both challenging and stressful. In this stage student-classmate-teacher

relationship is a must. As all parents know, student relationship with their teacher is

crucially important. It influences and affects their academic performance, motivation and

psychosocial well- being (Katia Frederiksen, Jean Rhodes 2004). However, in preference

to school attendance, more and more families are taking the option of home-based

schooling. Although two generalizations about this development support the data. The

first is that in objectives, methods and ambitions, families show significant diversity

(Roland Meighan 1995). a procedure by which individuals take the initiative to assess

their learning needs, develop learning objectives, identify human and material resources

for learning, and establish learning outcomes, with or without the assistance of others.

The purpose of this study is to know the effectiveness of Self learning to the Grade-11

Students of Balucuc High School and its impact to their Academic performance in the

first semester for this school year.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to access the impact and effectiveness of self-learning

to the academic performance of Senior High School students in Balucuc High School.

OF GRADE-11 STUDENTS OF BALUCUC HIGH SCHOOL

This study will further answer the following questions:

a. What is the impact of self-learning on their grades for the first semester?

b. What are the factors that can affect the focus of grade-11 students of Balucuc High

School in their self-study?

c. Did the grade-11 students pass the first semester

Significance of the Study

The result of this research will be beneficial to students, teachers, and parents. This

will help to enlighten and widen their knowledge about the impact of self-learning to

their academic performance. As a result, students are expected to get the skills that need

to improve on their academic performance. They are also expected to overcome the

factors that affect the focus on their self-study.

Students – They are guided to further explore topics they are interested in by practicing

self-study, while developing stronger study skills. One of the key benefits of self-study is

that students are able to take control of their own learning. And they become even more

interested in learning when students have influence.

Teachers – This can provide more idea for the teachers effective self-learning to their

students and to monitor the students’ performance on self-learning.

Parents – So that parents will acquire the outcome of their children's self-learning and

help them understand their academic work in self-study.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is primarily focus on the assessment of Grade-11 Students of Balucuc

High School with their Academic Performance in self-learning modules. The researchers

aim to describe the students who pass or fail in the self-learning, the number of

respondents is also limited. It composed 10 students in each section for Grade-11

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Review of Related Literature

In our modern era it's easier than ever for students to learn by themselves, with so

much knowledge available at the fingertips of students and it’s called Self-Learning. Self-

learning is a method of studying where learners direct their own learning outside the

classroom and without direct supervision of a mentor or a professional. Nowadays

students can take charge of what they are learning and how they learn, self-study can be a

very useful way to learn for many students.

According to Zimmerman B. (2010) education has recently started to define and

evaluate key mechanisms by which students self-regulate their academic learning. In this

overview, he presents a general definition of self-regulated academic learning and

describes the distinctive features of this capacity to acquire information and skills.

Secondly, from the higher education, the learning has evolved from knowledge

development to goals and skills on learning. This indicates many of the student's study

time is spent outside the classroom working independently apart in setting goals,

9

determining how to accomplish them, and preparing individual study time, students take

an active role on their studying. Gie-Ok Noh & Dong Hee Kim (2019).

Along with individualized method of self-learning. Face-to-face teaching is

disappearing and distance learning methods are becoming more popular. The learner has

the advantage of using self-paced learning materials in this type of non-formal mode of

education. A.H. Sequeira (2012)

Furthermore, in an academic success, self-regulated learning plays an important

role. In this research has establishes the link between self-regulated learning and

educational achievement. It also provides some evidence of the mediating effect of

academic performance on the connection between self-regulated learning and academic

achievement. Sanrong Xiao (2019)

Apart from this a study about the students with high achievement showed

substantially greater use of 13 self-regulated learning categories. The membership of the

students in their respective achievement groups was predicted using their self-regulated

learning reports with 93% percent precision. When compared to students’ gender and

socioeconomic status indices in regression analyses, self-regulated learning measures

proved to be the best predictor of standardized achievement test scores. The findings

were explored in terms of a self-regulated learning interpretation of self-learning. Manuel

Martinez Pons (1986)

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SELF LEARNING

DISADVANTAGES

According to Al kindly (2018). Working in teams improves teamwork and

encourages brainstorming. As a response, more inventions are generated and efficiency

increases. Two or more individuals are often better than one for solving problems,

completing daunting tasks and growing innovation. Teamwork facilitates contact between

members of the team. Even though it has many benefits, there are many disadvantages to

it. Including

 No face-to-face contact

 Lack of versatility

 Lack of trainers’ feedback

 Slow revolution

 Good e-learning is difficult to do

ADVANTAGES

According Ming-Hung Lin (2017). She states that self-learning has greater

positive effects on the learning outcome than traditional teaching does, and learning

motivation shows substantial positive impacts on the learning effect in the outcome of

learning.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This is a quantitative research study since the data that has been collected is in numerical

form.

This research specifies pre-experimental designs as it aims to determine if self-learning

has an effect to the academic performance of the grade 11 students in Balucuc High

School.

Pre-experimental designs are experimental schemes in which, after treatment has been

applied, a subject or group is observed in order to test if the treatment has the potential to

induce improvement. (Frey, 2018).

Data Collection Procedure

Observation and survey will be use in collecting information. In monitoring the actual

grades of the respondent will give us the data for our observation followed by surveying

14

every respondent with the propose questions, about the impact of self-learning to their

academic performance, but the researcher need to ask for the approval of the students if

they are willing to be part of the research to be conducted.

The researchers will personally message the school head and teachers of the Senior High

School to ask a permission for the students who are needed in gathering information, this

will follow by the collection of related literature, studies and theories.

Plan for Data Analysis

The data gathered will be subjected to descriptive analysis

Frequency distribution and Percentage. This will be used to determine the number of

respondents in every section

Mean. This will be used to find out the Impact of Self Learning to the Academic

Performance of Grade 11 students.

The population of Grade 11 students enrolled in Balucuc High School is 42 in

11-St. John, 46 in 11-St. Francis, and 46 in 11-St. James for the total of 134. The

researchers will be needing 30 respondents. Hence, 22% of the grade 11 population will

be used.

Additionally, the researchers will be using observation and survey that will be given to

the chosen respondents

Ethical Considerations
