5. OWNERS PROJECT REQUIRMENT

In this section, the owner’s project (HVAC) requirement is described. Important points

from Client’s/ Architect’s design guidelines and deviations are captured here for re-

confirmation. In absence of a design guideline, HVAC designers’ own assumptions

based on standard industry practices are provided for Clients review & approval.
5.1 HVAC Requirements

As per the input from Architect, this Auditorium shall be used for multipurpose. Our

Scope in the proposed Project is to provide Air-conditioning and Ventilation for the

Auditorium area.

5.2 Occupancy & Internal Load Requirements

The Occupant dissipates considerable amount of heat due to respiration and

metabolism. Human body’s perspiration also adds moisture which is adding latent heat

to the area. Hence the number of people occupies a room plays a considerable role in

deciding the air-conditioning load. Also, the general / task / focus lighting of the areas

add heat to the indoor which shall also be accounted in calculation of ventilation and

air-conditioned load. The electrical equipment’s inside the air-conditioned areas also

dissipate heat and the same shall be accounted for calculating the ventilation & air-

conditioning load.

5.3 Indoor Air Quality – Ventilation Criteria

The purpose of this section is to specify minimum ventilation rates and indoor air

quality that will be acceptable to human occupants and are intended to minimize the

potential for adverse health effects.

The fresh air ventilation shall be as per ASHRAE 62.1-2016 standard.

5.4 Life Safety Requirements

• Necessary earth leakage protection for personnel & equipment protection, fault level

discrimination for breakers to protect the system under short circuits, over load,

over/under voltage protections shall be provided for the electrical equipments.

• The electrical panels for HVAC Equipments shall be provided with suitable relays to

stop the operation, in case of receiving fire signal.

• The electrical circuit breakers inside electrical panels for HVAC airside equipment’s

shall be provided with suitable relays to stop the operation, in case of receiving fire

signal. Client shall provide Fire alarm control module near each electrical panel for

HVAC airside equipment.

5.5 Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability Goals

• All HVAC equipment’s’ energy performance shall confirm to ASHRAE 90.1

• The refrigerant used in A/C units shall be non-ozone depleting refrigerants as

recommended by the Montreal Protocol.

5.6 Accessibility, Maintainability and Aesthetic Requirements

• DX type outdoor units (i.e., Condensing Units) will be installed in terrace floor.

Suitable access for service shall be provided.

• Auditorium area Air-conditioning shall be served by Floor mounted AHU.

• Hi-Wall mount Split unit shall be proposed for the Green room. Condensing unit

will be placed at ground floor level.

• Fresh air to Auditorium shall be provided through Fresh Air Louver at AHU room.

A comfortable, aesthetically pleasing services infrastructure shall be established in

coordination with architectural drawings.

It’s essential to plan the services in aesthetical manner without compromising on the

technicality. Things like maintaining symmetry with the area, with other service

elements, etc., shall be kept in mind.

6. HVAC SYSTEM DESIGN

HVAC system shall be designed according to the requirements of each room and such
that the Temperature & Humidity will be maintained by considering the below design
factors:

• Orientation of the Building.

• Latitude and Longitude of the site location.

• Outside Temperature.

• Size of the Building.

• External heat transferred through Wall, Roof or Ceiling, etc.,

• External heat transferred through glass and windows.

• Purpose of building or room.

• Storage of material.

• Occupancy level.

• Heat emitted by lighting fixtures.

• Heat emitted by equipment’s such as computers, machineries, etc.,

6.1 Orientation Parameters

• Site Location : Puducherry

• Latitude : 11°94’ North

• Longitude : 79º80’ East

6.2 Outdoor Design Condition

* Note: Puducherry weather data is unavailable in ISHRAE HVAC Handbook. Hence, we have
considered Chennai Weather data for calculation

* Note: There is no control on Relative Humidity. For design purpose 55±5% considered. Even

though the designed RH is 55±5% in conditioned areas, RH level depends on indoor occupancy

and heat dissipation of internal Equipment’s and ambient temperature. The RH may vary from

50 to 60%.
6.4 Heat Load Calculation

Based on the above design inputs Air-conditioning load calculations were worked out.

Heat load calculation summary is as tabulated below.

7. AIR-CONDITIONING PROPOSAL

Air-conditioning is considered for the areas as specified in “Annexure-1”.

The selection of specific systems will be based on system performance, operating

efficiency, safety, long-term durability and ease of operation as well as site condition.

The total estimated air conditioning load (Maximum Demand) works out to 69 TR.

It is proposed to provide Floor mounted AHU with DX type condensing units for
Auditorium.

The proposed air conditioning system shall consist of air-cooled outdoor unit (i.e.,
Condensing unit) comprising of multiple scroll compressors for each area. Indoor unit
shall be floor mounted type AHU. These indoor units shall be connected to outdoor
units through copper refrigerant pipes. As per brief, outdoor condensing units shall be
placed in terrace floor level. The supply air shall be transferred through GI ducts, the
return air shall be collected above the false ceiling area and return back to the AHU
room.
