Separable Differential Equations.
𝑑𝑦
The differential equation of the form 𝑑𝑥 = 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) is called separable, if 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = ℎ(𝑥)𝑔(𝑦); that is,
𝑑𝑦
(S) = ℎ(𝑥)𝑔(𝑦)
𝑑𝑥

In order to solve it, perform the following steps:

1. Solve the equation 𝑔(𝑦) = 0, which gives the constant solutions of (S);
𝑑𝑦
2. Rewrite the equation (S) as = ℎ(𝑥)𝑔(𝑦), and, then, integrate
𝑔(𝑦)
1
∫ 𝑔(𝑦) 𝑑𝑦 = ∫ ℎ(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 to obtain, 𝐺(𝑦) = 𝐻(𝑥) + 𝐶

Example A: Solve the following separable differential equations.

Example 1. = 2𝑥 Example 2. 𝑑𝑥 = (𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 + 2)

Example 3. = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 4 Example 4. 𝑑𝑥 = 6𝑒 3𝑥 + 1 ; y=3, x=1
𝑑𝑥

∫ 𝑑𝑦 = ∫(𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 4) dx ∫ 𝑑𝑦 = ∫(6𝑒 3𝑥 + 1) dx
