1. SCOPE

1.1. This procedure covers the charpy impact testing of metallic materials
and testing conditions can be changed by customer’s requirement.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENT

2.1. ASME III Div.1 Ed. 2015 Subsection NB.

2.2. ASME III Div.1 Ed. 2015 Subsection NC.
2.3. ASME III Div.1 Ed. 2015 Subsection ND.
2.4. ASME III Div.1 Ed. 2015 Subsection NE.
2.5. ASME III Div.1 Ed. 2015 Subsection NF
2.6. ASTM E-23
2.7. ASME SA-370

3. Personnel

3.1. Charpy impact testing shall be performed by the Lab. Engineer who
is qualified in accordance to procedure NQAP 02.03.

4. Description

4.1. A Charpy impact test is a dynamic test in which a specified specimen

(machined or surface ground and notched) is struck and broken by a
single blow in a Charpy impact testing machine. And then the energy
absorbed and Lateral expansion in the broken specimen shall be
measured, and compared with the acceptance criteria in order to evaluate
the toughness of specimen tested.

5. Apparatus

5.1. Testing machine

5.1.1. The Charpy impact testing 406.8 J (299.8 ft-lbf) capacity Tinius
Olsen Machine, Serial No. 203577 shall be used in the scale from
12.5 J (9.2 ft-lbf) to 80% of the maximum capacity of the
machine.

5.1.2. Anvils, specimen supports, striking edges, and pendulum shall be

set and maintained within the tolerance requirements of applied
specification.
5.1.3. Test apparatuses should be calibrated in accordance with the
calibration procedure NQAP 12.03 Rev.0

5.2. Temperature control systems

5.2.1. For the Charpy impact testing at the other temperatures except
room temperature the temperature control systems are to be used.
5.2.2. In these cases the holding time of specimen at specified
temperature prior to starting test should be within the limits
specified by the test instructions.
5.2.3. Unless otherwise specified, holding time of specimen in the liquid
should not be less than 5 minutes, In the gas should not be less
than 30 minutes.
5.3. Self-centering tongs
5.3.1. Self-centering tongs recommended in specification shall be used in
order to precisely place the specimen in the test machine.

6. Test specimens

6.1. The number of Charpy impact tests required, the location and orientation
of the specimen, and type of specimen shall be met the Sampling plan.

6.2. Care should be exercised in preparation of specimens, particularly in

machining to obtain the desired precision and accuracy in test results.
6.3. Notches shall be machined after any heat treatment.

7. Procedure

7.1. Checking prior to testing

Test shall be performed by personnel who are trained, qualified.
Prior to testing a group of specimens, and before a specimen is placed in
position to be tested, the machine shall be checked by a free swing of the

pendulum with the indicator at the initial position, a free swing of the
pendulum shall indicate zero energy on machines reading directly in
energy which are compensated for frictional losses.
7.2. Control of testing temperature
In most materials, impact values vary with temperature. In case of
Charpy impact testing at the other temperature except room temperature,
testing temperature shall be controlled in accordance with the following
procedure.
7.2.1. Low-temperature tests
1) The device used to measure the temperature of the bath should
be placed in the center of a group of the specimens being
cooled. Hold specimens cooled in a liquid medium in a bath at
the desired temperature within ±1 °C for at least 5 minutes.
2) Remove the specimen from the coolant and break within 5
seconds.
3) The mechanism used to remove the specimen from the coolant
shall be left in the coolant except when handling the
specimens.
7.2.2. Place the specimen to be tested at the center of the anvil by using
the self-centering tongue.
7.3. Operation of the machine
7.3.1. Set the energy indicator at its initial position, take the test
specimen from its cooling or heating medium, place it in proper
position on the specimen rests, and release the pendulum
smoothly, this entire sequence shall take less than 5 seconds.
7.3.2. Strike the test specimen on the opposite side of the notch while
supported against the supporting blocks in such a position that the
center line of the striking edge strikes in line with the center line
of the notch. The notch shall be midway between the points of
support.
7.3.3. If any specimen jams in the machine, disregard the results and
check the machine thoroughly for damage or maladjustment,
which would affect its calibration.

8. Test result

8.1. Read the energy absorbed in the specimen by the indicator of the impact
testing machine.
8.2. Test temperature shall be recorded on the report.
8.3. Determination of FATTn (Fracture Appearance Transition Temperature),
when required. When the specification requires determination of a
transition temperature. Eight to twelve specimens are usually used.
8.3.1. The percent of shear fracture may be determined by any of the
following methods:
1) Measure the length and width of the cleavage portion of the
fracture surface as shown in Fig.1, and determine the percent
shear from either Table.1 or Table.2 depending on the units of
measurement.
2) Compare the appearance of the fracture appearance chart such
as that shown in Fig.2
