I have learned the significance of engineering the risk in order to mitigate or even alleviate
the risks of calamities such as earthquake. Even with the advance technology that Japan utilizes
to manage and assess catastrophical occurrences such as earthquake, and tsunami, it was still not
enough as the intensity was far too great. Through this, engineers must be able to innovate and
not be stagnant in developing tools in mitigating the risks. Various structural applications in
Japanese construction that alleviated the risks are the installation of pendulum like structure to
absorb seismic forces from earthquakes and the construction of a seawall to prevent water from
entering the landmass.

structure. Furthermore, I am able to immerse myself in data processing methodologies applied in
actual site.

• SUMMARY 1

The video shows how complex the project in Dubai was. Building artificial Island isa a very
hard project to do. I learned a lot about thus video and some technique. While the engineers build
this project they went thru some struggles and projects that hinder their work. One big problem
was the natural climate of the ocean. The waves of the ocean can easily detroy a artificial island
when there is no break water. It was amazing how they build and how fast the project was done.
Another problem was the material needed to accomodate that big project and to finish it in time.
After 2 year they finish the island to make way of the structural buildings that will be in the island.
But they saw that the water is not circulating properly so they build a opening to thw brwak water
to solve that issue. Also the engineer anticipate that the sand is not stiff enough to build a
structure so they use Vibrocompaction to make the sand firm and compact for the people to be
safe. This project was one of the best experience for engineers to learn from. Building a billion
dollar project that is almost impossible is a great learning to know. And amazingly with the limited
time they accomplished the project and make Dubai one of the best tourist destinations.

MODULE 2

• SUMMARY

The video shown was about building a sea city. This project is bringing water in land to make
a city made of water. Its like a artificial beach. They made this from opening the land for the water
from rhe sea comes in. But it is a hard project. They encounter problems while building this Sea
city. One is stagnant water. Because of the structures water doesnt circulate right and it can affect
marine life. So they came up with a solution of building a barrier that will became a pump for the
water to circulate. This pump is a self operating pump. Because of this marine life problem were
solved. Another was the materials needed in building structures. There was a time that suppliers
had a problem in providing materials. Another problem that they encounter was sa sand. The sand
was too soft that it became not safe for structures to build on. So they came with a solution of
applying Dynamic Compaction to the soil to make it stable and strong for building to be safe.

I learned the use of special equipment for underwater construction. Removing water or
dewatering is vital to allow construction to push through. There are various methods such as the
use of coffer dams or engineers may utilize by filling the body of water with soil and dewatering
the enclosed water site.

In this event, I was able to learn about how to model traffic in the time of pandemic. This
is very timely as we are currently in a transportation crisis given that there were far greater
demand the supply of transportation means. Furthermore, the speaker, Engr. Alben Bagabaldo,
was able to discuss some solutions in highway and transportation systems including automation
of public transportation. This also inspired me to learn more about transportation engineering in
general.

Module 3 have 4 videos that showed about different types of road, Road layers,
Step by step procedure of building roads, and Construction Vehicles and equipments.
The videos were informative as it aided in familiarizing about road construction in
general. For the road layers, it is important to determine the layers as it creates stability
and improves overall strength. For the types of roads, these are dependent on the
location, and amount of traffic as this presents certain advantages and disadvantages.
Construction vehicles help to create efficient road construction as it speeds up
construction and decrease cost.

7 Types of Roads Based on Construction:

1. Earthen Roads 5. Water Bound Macadam (WBM)
2. Gravel Roads Roads
3. Murrum Roads 6. Bituminous Roads

In this webinar, I have learned the process and methodology in creating safer streets and
highways in our decade. Utilizing technology has been a concerted effort for the research
society in improving, assessing, and analyzing the safety of our roads and highways.
Furthermore, the collaboration of both public and partnership is vital in achieving these
goals.

• DISCUSSION 2-A

I learned a lot from the webinar from PICE titled "Tips on how to Plan, Design and
Construct a Low ride Structure".

13
While listening to the question and answer I learned a lot of information about structural
engineering practices and legal manners. The panels answered questions from the
participants that helps me understand some facts about structural project. They discussed
the techniques and methods of actual construction projects. They also discuss the
importance of geotecnical studies before proceeding to the project. They also discussed
the actually pricing and cost of building a project. Also I learned a lot about the legal
manners in construction field. One of the topic I enjoyed is the legal manners of being a
Contractor. Because here in the philippines there are contractors that practicing but
doesn't have a license. The panels discuss the difference of being a contractor in a private
sector and in Public/ Government sector. Also they discuss the scopes and limitations of
Contractors. They discussed a lot about legal terms and rules in our field of Civil
Engineering. This Webinar helped me a lot to Understand some of my questions about
Civil Engineering.

This module is about water resource. Water resource one of the most important
engineering. It includes the study and management of equipment, facilities and
techniques that are used to manage and preserve life's most plentiful resource. Water is
everybody's need. Water lining and designing from source to each outlet is important to
consider. Failure to design water lines correctly may affect other future structures around
it.

Webinar: ICE Exxplains: The 2020 Marikina and Cagayan Flooding

Speaker: Dr. Guillermo Q. Tabios III, Professor Emeritus, UP Institute of Civil Engineering

15
I have learned information on the recent Marikina and Cagayan Flooding. There
was a direct relationship with the decrease of natural flood mitigating trees due to
quarrying and the amount of runoff that accumulated in the rivers of Marikina and
Cagayan. Furthermore, these areas are valleys meaning are enveloped in mountain
ranges which makes them the catch basins for the runoff from the precipitation in

16
mountains. The speaker suggested that reforestation must be done to reduce the
accumulation of flood water in these rivers which has a limit or boundary before overflow.

Module 4 is about Construction of Stormwater drainage. This video showed the

importance of correct step by step process of building a drainage system. Excavation is
very important in building a drainage, this process will show the different layers of soil
that will affect the foundation engineer must construct. Foundation is also important
because it will carry the pressure and loads of drainage system. Having piles can help the
foundation more stable and sturdy. I also learned techniques and engineering code that
may help me to my future project. One technique is to locate the natural water course,
this is where the water drainage will go. Divert the water around the culvert site. The
video also showed that it is important to test and check the materials that will be use in
building drainage. All the pipes, soil and all materials needed to make sure the quality of
the work.

• REFLECTIVE ESSAY

A complex project of building an artificial island was ordered by the Prince of Dubai.
Engineers from Sweden? Were tasked to built the island in the middle of the ocean that is set
to be the Dubai’s biggest tourism destination with various luxurious infrastructures. However,
the project faced numerous challenges, one of which is the natural climate or the current of
the waves that can greatly affect the artificial island taking into consideration the logistics
and availability of resources and materials in building the said island. In order to make the
island construction possible, the engineers built a breakwater to protect the island from the
effects of waves. Moreover, a vibrocompaction technique was used in order for the sand to
be suitable for construction of different structures and to ensure safety of the people. After
2 years of continuous construction, the artificial island was completed; however, it was noted
that the water stopped circulating. An opening on the breakwater was built as a solution to
the water circulation problem. This complex and almost impossible billor dollar project is one
of the greatest accomplishments in the field of engineering that inspired different countries
making Dubai as of the top tourism destination not just in Middle East but in the world.
