 Dart manipulation is the 6

changing the location of a
dart within the pattern frame.
3
 Dart can be transferred to any
location around the pattern’s 2 8

outline based on pivotal points,

without affecting the size or fit 1

of the garments.

 Dart is responsible for fit and will be
part of the design.
 Dart manipulation is a useful tool for
creating interesting, innovative dart
placements and style lines.
 The darts can be stitched as new darts,
as style lines, can be converted into
tucks, pleats, gathers, yokes, etc.
Two methods for making an alteration to the dart are:

 Slash and Spread Method

 Pivotal Transfer Method

Slash & spread method

The dart is relocated by making slash

on the pattern and closing the older
darts.
Procedure:

1. Trace a bodice pattern with center front waist dart and mark bust
point ‘BP’.

2. Label dart legs ‘A’ and ‘B’.

3. Mark the new position of dart and draw a slash line from the bust
point to the new dart position.

4. Slash through the line up to the bust point.

5. Close the old dart to open the new one.

6. Place pattern on a new paper and trace.

7. Mark dart point 5/8” away from bust point.

8. Draw dart legs to dart points.

Pivotal transfer method

In this method the pattern is rotated around a pivotal

point to mark the new position. This method does
not require the working pattern and it is a faster
method.
Procedure

1. Mark the dart legs ‘A’ and ‘B’ and bust point ‘BP’ on the pattern.
2. Mark the new position of the dart as ‘C’.
3. Trace the section of pattern from dart leg ‘A’ up to the mark ‘C’.
4. Place the pattern on a paper with a push pin through the bust point
(Pivotal Point).
5. Rotated the pattern, around the pinned dart point, until the dart leg ‘B’
comes close with the dart leg ‘A’.
6. Trace the remaining section of the pattern from ‘B’ to point ‘C’.

7. Mark dart point 5/8” from bust point.

8. Draw dart legs to dart points.
