EXERCISE 2.

Was it for information? For history? For inspiration? To record of the past? Write your comments.

Case no.1

Rizal wrote about his younger days in his memoirs entitled Memorias de un Estudiante de
Manila while he was student at the University of Santo Thomas. He lived a rather comfortable life in his
home in Calamba. That was before municipal police led by the town mayor barged into his house and
arrested his mother for the attempted poisoning of the wife of Jose Alberto. The men who came to
arrest his mother were the ones who were frequently in the house and were invited there for many
social occasions. According to Rizal, he saw how people they called friends treated his mother. He called
the mayor a fanatic follower of the friars. From then on Rizal developed a character that was untrusting.

From his diary what happened to him? What was the purpose of his diary?

Diary is considerable as primary source of information. Meaning, Rizal’s diary is created for
informing, inspiration, history and record of past. Informing is such way that Filipino should aware for
the two mask that people has. He did not expected that her mother consider as friend will be the one
who will arrest her from the accused of poisoning. History and as a record of past, since this diary
becomes the beginning of having goals in life of Rizal which is exterminating the injustice government
of the Spaniards to Filipino citizen. From this scenario, I formulated ideas that this is the main reason
of writing well known literature in Philippine history; his Noli Me Tangere and El Filibustirismo. For
inspiration because Rizal did not used abusive action for competing against the injustice of
government during this time.

Moreover, the given scenario inform us how Spaniards hits ones enemy. They were trying to
hit the relatives or someone who is much close to us for the assurance of winning against the battle
they created. Comparable of person who arrested his mother who is considerably friends of his
mother. So, during this time up to now, we should chose the trustworthy friends. We don’t know
when and how people change for certain reasons.

Case No. 2
Miss Cecilia Diwa, daughter of one of the founders of the Katipunan Ladislao Diwa told a story of
how the Katipunan was born. According to her, her father invited Andres Bonifacio and Teodora Plata to
a convocation held at the University of Santo Tomas. They were barely seated when they heard the
priest hurling insults at Filipinos especially the young women whom they accused of being easy going
and without virtue. Seething with anger, the three left the meeting with their anger with the Spaniards.
According to Miss Diwa, the idea forming a secret society did not come from Bonifacio but from her
father. After the convocation, Diwa met with Plata and decided to form a secret society who aims will be
pattern after the “Black Capes” of Italy. Its aim was to rally the Filipinos by uprising the conditions at that
time. The motive would not to overthrow the Spaniards. Plata then suggested, “Let us include Manong
Andres in our association”. They brought Bonifacio in the triumvirate of the organization, which was
born on July 6, 1892. According to Miss Diwa, her father should be considered as the real Father of the
Katipunan.

Discuss what purpose of information that made the three men form the Katipunan.

The aforementioned case informing us how Katipunan was formulated and born. It inform us
how it started and whom ideas it can from. The three Katipunan founders are Landislao Diwa,
Teodora Plata and Andres Bonifacio. They also inform us how brave our national heroes are. They
think and act in accordance to good sake of their citizens even they are not in the position and has no
enough power to fight the Spaniards. This serve as record of past since most of us know that
Katipunan was created by Andres Bonifacio but truthfully, it is from the idea of his father. Katipunan
was created to overthrow the Spaniards due to injustice government of them to Filipinos. On the
other hand, they were trying to inspire us. Inspiring by means of the creation of the society in order to
hinder the Spaniards in our homeland. They trying to convince us to think and do also for the sake of
our nation. Since the teenagers are the hope of the future, then, they trying to inspired us. Andres
Bonifacio is consider as the father of Katipunan for many reason of his discipline of governing Filipino
against the Spaniards. Likewise, the historical event happened which entitles “The Cry of Pugad
Lawin” wherein by the supervise of Andres Bonifacio, Katipuneros and him tore their “cedulas” on
August 23, 1896.
