Management Strategies to Reduce Poultry Pollution in Busilac, Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya

INTRODUCTION
Busilac is a barangay in the municipality of Bayombong, in the province of Nueva
Vizcaya. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 3,101. This represented 5.04% of
the total population of Bayombong. The community was surrounded by trees, vegetable gardens
and is productive in rice industry. The people in barangay Busilac are hardworking and hospitable
and friendly to everyone whom visits their community.
However, it is noticable that people are suffering from poultry pollution since poultry
farms surrounds the barangay. Poultry facilities in that community has been a source of odor and
attract flies, rodents and other pests that create local nuisances and carry disease. Local
disturbances and landscape degradation are the local negative amenities in the surroundings of
poultry farms. Flies are an additional concern for residents living near poultry farms. Water
pollution has also been reported since pesticides used to control pests and predators have been
reported to cause pollution when they enter groundwater and surface water. Improper disposal of
poultry carcasses has contributed to water-quality problems especially in areas prone to flooding
or where there is a shallow water table.
As a result, this study is focused on the management strategies that people living in
barangay Busilac do to be able to help them alleviate the effects of poultry pollution both on
their health and environment.

RATIONALE AND BACKGROUND

Over recent decades the poultry industry has made tremendous adjustments to meet the
increasing demand for inexpensive and safe supply of meat and eggs and this growth has been
accompanied by structural changes within the sector, characterized by the emergence and growth
of industrial farming establishments, and the intensification and concentration of poultry
operations. The driving forces behind structural change in poultry production are no different
than those that affect other livestock commodities: market pull, innovation and economies of
scale.
Local disturbances and landscape degradation are typical local negative amenities in the
surroundings of poultry farms. Pollution of soil and water with nutrients, pathogens and heavy
metals is generally caused by poor manure-management and occurs where manure is stored.
Manure is either recycled on cropland belonging to the animal farm or marketed.
Poultry facilities are a source of odor and attract flies, rodents and other pests that create
local nuisances and carry disease. Odor emissions, caused by a large number of contributing
compounds including ammonia, volatile organic compounds, and hydrogen sulphide, from
poultry farms adversely affect the life of people living in the vicinity. Flies are an additional
concern for residents living near poultry facilities. Department of Health indicated that
residences that were located in close proximity to poultry facilities had 83 times the average
number of flies and mosquitoes which can transmit diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid,

malaria, filaria and dengue fever. Their presence is mainly related to animal-feed management
and especially to storage and losses from feeding systems.
Water pollution; pesticides used to control pests and predators have been reported to
cause pollution when they enter groundwater and surface water. Improper disposal of poultry
carcasses can contribute to water-quality problems especially in areas prone to flooding or where
there is a shallow water table. The most significant environmental issue resulting from
slaughterhouse operations is the discharge of wastewater into the environment. Like many other
food-processing activities, the necessity for hygiene and quality control in meat processing
results in high water usage and consequently high levels of wastewater generation, having high
biochemical and chemical oxygen demand due to the presence of organic materials such as
blood, fat, flesh, and excreta which in turn may lead to reduced levels of activity or even death of
aquatic life. Residues of chemicals such as chlorine, used for washing
This article analyzes the environmental impacts arising from poultry production, and
evaluating such impacts all the way from feed production to animal production and slaughtering.
It considers impacts on all environmental media – air, water and land, and most especially, the
locals living in barangay Busilac.
This study aims to solve the health and environmental problems caused by the poultry
farms in barangay Busilac. It aims to provide the people management strategies which would
help them alleviate poultry pollution.
As the researcher go along through this study, she/he come up with the reasons why it is a
must to take action to it. First, is that people has been having health risks caused by the poultry
pollution. Second, environment becomes polluted as well. Air, land and water has been polluted
because of the poultries' mismanagement. Third, poultry farms has attracted flies that disturbed
the people in the barangay making people uncomfortable to sleep and eat in their houses. The
officials that are assigned on their specific areas must take an action to alleviate the effects of
poultry pollution.
The importance of this study is to raise awareness not only for the barangay officials but
also to the people who lives near there regarding the health and environmental risks that poultry
farms cause. Moreover, this study could lessen the effects of poultry pollution in the community
hence could make the environment safer and friendly living in case some tourists are planning to
visit their area.
