Objective

:
To verify that the relation R in the set L of all lines in a plane defined by
R = {(l,m) : l is perpendicular to m} is symmetry but neither reflexive nor
transitive .
Approach ( Method)

Draw some lines on the sheet of paper such that some of them are parallel, some
are perpendicular to each other and some are inclined .
Demonstration
1.Represent lines as a, b , c , l , m , n , p ,q
2.Line l is perpendicular to each of the lines a, b, c
3. Line p is Perpendicular to line q
4.Lines a||b, b||c, m||n,

Observations :

1. R = {(l,a),(l,b),(l,c),(p,q)}
2. . We know no line is perpendicular to itself so the relation R ——-(is / is
not ) Reflexive .
3.  In figure line 'l' is perpendicular to line 'a', is line 'a' perpendicular to line 'l'
( yes/No ).
4.  Similarly line ' b' is perpendicular to line 'l', is line ' l' perpendicular to line 'a'(
yes/No ).
5. And line 'p' is perpendicular to line 'q', is line 'q' perpendicular to line
'p'( yes/No ).
6. Therefore the relation R is ———- Symmetric (is /is not).
7.  line 'a' is perpendicular to line 'l', is line 'l' perpendicular to line 'b'.Is line 'a'
perpendicular to line 'b' ?( yes/No ). Therefore the relation R ————
transitive (is or is not)
8. Conclusion the relation R is not an equivalence relation
