Relation
Objective
Toverify that the relation R in the set L of all lines in a plane, defined by R = {(, m) :l1m) is symmetric but
Pre-requisite Knowledge
(a) Meaning of relations and its different types such as- reflexive relation, symmetric relation and transitive relation.
(b) Properties of parallel lines, perpendicular lines and transversal lines
Materials Required
A thick cardboard, colourful chartpapers, thin plastic strips or wire or colourful ribbons, few board pins and paper
pins, fevicol etc.
Demonstration
(a) Take a chart paper of any colour (Here white colour (6) Now take any two pins and join them with the help
chart paper is shown) and paste it on the piece of of thin plastic strips or colourful ribbon tightly in
cardboard with the help of board pins. such a way that few of them represent horizontal
lines or vertical lines as /. l2.. !9. See Fig. 1.2.
Now take few paper pins and put them randomly on
These horizontal lines depict parallel lines and
the chart paper as shown in the Fig. 1.1.
vertical lines depict perpendicular lines.
