TOPIC: EFFECT OF ABORTION IN KENYA

1
 INTRODUCTION

Abortion is a term used to describe a purposeful ending of a pregnancy by means of fetus

or embryo removal before it is viable to survive outside the mother's womb. It is also called an
induced miscarriage in contrast to miscarriages that occur spontaneously and occurs in
approximately 30% to 50% of pregnancies (www.nichd.nih.gov. July 15, 2013).

It used to be illegal in most parts of the world but is gradually becoming legalized. The
turning point in changing the legislation on abortion was the infamous Roe v Wade case in which
it was ruled that the state was not entitled to interfere with a woman's right to privacy or to
prevent her from having a pregnancy terminated at request. Around 56 million abortions are
performed each year in the World, ‘Health Organization. 28 September 2017 from the original
on 29 September 2017. With about 45% done unsafely’

Abortion has been a common practice for centuries. This was, however, not regulated by
law. Nowadays, abortions are legal and available on demand in most of the developed world
countries. Legislations vary from country to country and, sometimes, within a single country. In
the most permissive legislations, abortion is allowed on broad grounds including on a woman's
request, without any medical indications. Other countries only allow it in special cases including
the pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, or cases when the fetus has severe congenital
malformations. 97% of the countries, however, allow the pregnancy to be terminated when the
mother's health is at risk. Although those in favor of abortion claim that a fetus feels no pain, that
it is merely a “clump of cells”, this can be challenged as Doctor Maureen L. Condic, a professor
of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Utah, explains that embryos cannot be
reduced to collections of human cells, they can grow, to mature, maintain a delicate
physiological balance, and adapt to changing conditions. The embryos may not resemble a
human being at the beginning, but Dr. Condic raises the question “if our respect for human life
should really depend on its appearance”. The innocent children don’t have to be responsible for
your mistakes and an abortion is the euphemism of ‘to kill the baby.’ Furthermore, the process
of termination of the undesirable baby’s life is often very harmful to woman’s health and may
lead to sterility.

 Thesis Statement
2
Abortion is the most controversial issue having no grounds of agreement among two polar
aspects. The argument is the life and death though the uncertainty of complication makes it
difficult. We don’t believe in abortion because it is murder we are not the ones that can decide
whether the person a woman gives birth should live or die.

 Background

As much as critics have supported abortion for the safety of mothers, abortion remains to
be wrong. In biological point of view, the practice subjects mothers to health issues or even
death. According to Ushie et al. (2019), there is high possibility of mothers developing body
complications after abortion a reason that has compelled the Ministry of Health-Kenya (2003) to
come up with Post-abortion care program that will health women to overcome the risks caused
by abortion. There are several factors that can lead to health complications during and after
abortion. One of the factors is the procedures used for abortion. Most mothers prefer traditional
practices which are not scientifically proven because they fear confrontation by government laws
once they carry out the practice in government health facilities. Such traditional practices might
be harmful to them since they are carried out by people who are not skilled in facilitating
abortion. Another factor is the age of a victim. In most cases, teenagers lead in carrying out
abortion due to unwanted pregnancy so that they can continue with their education or fear of
parental wrath and shame (Biggs et al., 2013). Since their bodies are not well developed,
complications might arise during abortion leading to permanent infertility after the abortion.

Abortion has psychological and emotional effects on the victims. In plain words, abortion
can be equated to killing since it involves termination of fetus which is a living thing. After
abortion, the mother might be overwhelmed by fear because she feels that she has committed
murder. Such feeling can lead to psychological disorders such as depression and insomnia among
others (Akin et al., 2004). Besides, emotions disturbances can as well be experienced by mothers
who committed abortion. This can be noted through shame, anxiety and fear once their actions
have been known by others in society. When such emotions become so strong, some mothers
might end up committing suicide. In comparison, mothers who have successfully given birth are
happy than those who have aborted which leads to a conclusion that abortion is wrong and
should be stopped at all cost.
3
Abortion compounds tragedy. People try to give justification for aborting a child, such as
the woman was raped, maybe the baby was being diagnosed with a defect or the woman’s health
was at risk but all in all we do not solve rape problem by killing an innocent child. We do not
cure a baby by taking his or her life nor do we avoid health issues by avoiding the reality of
another human. Women who have been raped must be compassionately cared for. But
compassionate care does not include executing a woman’s child. Parents facing a difficult
prenatal diagnosis must be given real facts and directed to others with helpful experiences. They
must not be forced into a quick choice for abortion or urged to take the life of their child instead
of giving her a chance to defy the odds. Women with high-risk pregnancies must be treated by
real medical professionals. But treatment does not include intentionally killing a child

Abortion takes innocent lives. Abortion is not good because it claims the lives of
innocent children. The child aborted has nothing to do with conception process and it is innocent
of all crimes that took place between the mother and father, he or she should be treated
separately and he or she has right to live Science could not be more clear. Unborn human beings
are living, separate, and unique. From the moment of fertilization – better known as conception –
a new human life is in existence. Ending this life is not ending “potential.” It is ending a life. It
punishes innocent people. A child does not deserve to die for the crimes of his father. A five-
year-old cannot be killed because his father is a rapist. A five-month-old unborn child should not
be allowed to be killed for the same reason. A child does not deserve to die because her mother
and/or her father were irresponsible. A child is completely innocent. A child did not decide that
his parents would have sex or that they would use ineffective contraception. An unborn child is
always innocent and should never be punished. We would do well to understand the modern
science that reveals the humanity of the unborn

Abortion violates feminist principles. Some feminists oppose all forms of violence,
including abortion, because they are inconsistent with the core feminist principles of justice, non-
violence and non-discrimination. We believe in a woman's right to control her body, and she
deserves this right no matter where she lives, even if she's still living inside her mother's womb.

Abortion is a male plot. Another group object to abortion because they see it as a male plot. (In
fact many of this group doesn’t object to abortion; they want people to be aware that men often
support abortion for a thoroughly bad reason.)They argue that men see the risk of pregnancy as
4
something that stops men having sex when they want it. If men are to achieve full sexual
freedom (i.e. the freedom to have sex without responsibility) it is essential that abortion be freely
available to backup contraception.

Abortion sidesteps oppression of women. Others oppose abortion because it provides a

way of side-stepping other real issues that should be addressed. One writer put it like this: There
are women who are raped and become pregnant; the problem is that they were raped, not that
they are pregnant. There are women who are starving who become pregnant; the problem is that
they are starving, not that they are pregnant. There are women in abusive relationships who
become pregnant; the problem is that they are in abusive relationships, not that they are pregnant.

As lives are lost in large numbers the society encounters various challenges such as; low
population rate which may result to factors such as; low labor turnout to do some work that is
either manual or technical in a country, low idea generation opportunities in the country and
unemployment of jobs in the country( Ohyama& Chris 2006). Nevertheless it can also lead to
low income tax generation in a nation and therefore it is advisable that people in the society more
so women quit abortion so as to make the society more and more productive and therefore be
able to generate more money and finally be in a position to have a good living position.

In conclusion, it is wise to say that abortion is not good in a nation because it has a
number of effects both in the humans’ life and in the society at large which may include;
numerous deaths more so for women, high number of school dropouts especially for young girls
who have carried out operations of abortion as a result of rape in the society. It may also lead to
increased stress among the involved people and the society at large. It can also lead to many
other effects as discussed above.

As it is written in God’s word that abortion is a crime and that God is the only person who
should give and take away people’s life, it is therefore advisable that all people respect and honor
every creature’s life and existence at all times.
