9. Date of commencement of the Project: 1st FEBRUARY, 2021

10. Probable date of completion of the project: 31ST JUNE, 2021

11. Scope / Objectives of the project:

Objectives of the project:
1) To use CO2 as an accelerating admixture to concrete such that it will offer additional
compressive strength to concrete and also reduce initial and final setting time
substantially.
2) To investigate the performance of concrete with respect to workability characteristics.
3) To study the mechanical properties of concrete containing CO2.

12. Methodology:
A system can be devised where CO2 in liquid form is injected to Ready Mix
Concrete, where pressurized CO2 is administered into the concrete using a gas
control system and injector. The concrete prepared by using CO2 as admixture
will
be tested for Compressive strength, slump test
and its results will be compared and evaluated against a standard reference
concrete batch prepared without addition of CO2.

KSCST: Student Project Programme: 44th series: 2020-2021 3

Note: In case of fabrication work in the project, an engineering drawing
with dimensions / detailed design should be attached to the proposal.
13. Expected Outcome of the project:
The use of Carbon Dioxide as an accelerating admixture to concrete will result in 4
substantial advantages:

1) CO2 is an inexpensive and abundantly available admixture.

2) The CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere will be trapped permanently into
concrete helping us achieve green environmental goals.

3) With administration of CO2 into concrete, the Carbonation reaction will take
place
which forms Calcium Carbonate and Calcium Silicate Hydrate (C-S-H) resulting in
additional compressive strength to concrete.

4) Since the construction industry is all about thrift and providing safety and
serviceability economically, the strength that we are achieving by injecting CO2 as
an accelerating admixture to concrete is additional and hence not necessary.
Also, cement is the expensive constituent of all the ingredients of concrete.
So, we can reduce the amount of cement to be added to the concrete which
results
in cost reduction and also reduces the Carbon Footprint as cement production
alone
contributes to 5% of global CO2 emissions.
