INSTRUMENTS USED IN

METROLOGY
Measuring instruments come with a scale, which is simply a set
of symbols or markings located on the instrument, often
accompanied by a numerical reference and usually along a
line or arc of a circle.
Now let's look at some of the most widely used measuring
instruments:

RULER
A ruler is essentially a thin bar used to draw straight lines,
usually containing calibrated lines by which a length can be
measured. By measuring a length we mean determining the
distance in a straight line between two points. The rulers are
manufactured in very different types, material and dimensions.
The most used scale is usually in centimeters and millimeters

SQUAD
Also known as shoulder-shoulder square or
framing square. It is a tool for measuring and
checking angles of 90º and 45º.

THE CALIBER OR
CALIPER
This instrument is used to measure lengths with much more
precision than the ruler. If the ruler can accurately measure
millimeters, the gauge goes to the tenth and even the half-
tenth of a millimeter. To measure exteriors, the two long legs
are used, to measure interiors (e.g. hole diameters) the two
small legs, and to measure depths a stem that comes out
from the rear.

MICROMETER

The micrometer is capable of more precise

measurements than even the caliper can. The
micrometer is a unit of length that can also be called
a micron, equivalent to one millionth of a meter (a
meter if we divide it into a million parts that is one
micron).

LEVEL
The level is a measuring instrument used to
determine the horizontality or verticality of an
element. There are different types, since it is a very
useful instrument for construction in general;
metal carpentry, aluminum carpentry, metal
constructions, etc.
